Today’s post, simple fall porch and entryway ideas, is all about decorating with pumpkins and flowers. Pretty simple, right?! I’m also giving tips on small porch decorating, and my approach to using larger accessories in the entryway.
I’m so happy to be participating in the Bloggers’ Best Fall Home Tour, hosted by my friend Kelly of The Tattered Pew. This is a five day tour with a new group of bloggers joining in each day. If you are stopping by from Lora’s Create and Ponder, welcome to Thistle Key Lane!

Simple Fall Porch And Entryway Ideas
Picking out pumpkins makes me feel like a big kid. It’s the anticipation of what I’ll find when hunting through huge piles of pumpkins that gets me so excited. Never mind how back breaking it is, because once I see those pumpkin on display I know it’s worth the trouble.
In truth I love all colors and varieties of pumpkins, so it’s always interesting to see what I will end up bringing home. Last year’s porch was full of color, which you can view by clicking on Fall Decorating Ideas For A Small Porch. This years porch is mostly green and white, but it still says fall to me.
I used to think that I couldn’t decorate our porch, because the space is so limited. After experimenting with different looks for several years that’s no longer the case. Now I have a kind of formula that works for me, and I’m sharing three easy tips with you.
Tips For Decorating A Small Porch For Fall
- eye catching wreath or door basket
- creating height with fall displays
- coordinating colors
Eye catching fall door basket
Before addressing the porch I like to concentrate on the front door first. For the last couple of years I’ve been using a door basket. It’s by far the easiest way to I’ve found to add seasonal decor to our front door.
For this fall basket I’m using two greenery picks from my Christmas stash to fill in the back. I’m also using two small picks for a pop of yellow, one large pick that looks a lot like tall grass and a purple thistle pick. You know I love thistles!
For a bit of frill, I’m adding ticking ribbon to the basket and finishing it off with a bow. So simple to make, but it makes a big impact.
Creating Height to Your Porch Displays
One of my best tips for a small porch is creating a stair stepping display with fall decor. To add some height I’m using a wood crate on the right side of the door to elevate one of the white mums plus a few gourds. Then I can nestle in another white mum and a short green pumpkin to finish the look.
A tall planter with coleus and ivy adds height and lush greenery to the left side of the door. The planter takes up a lot of space, so I’m extending the porch by displaying pumpkins on the flower bed’s bordering rocks and the walkway.
Need more ways to add height for flowers or pumpkins? Step stools, wood boxes, buckets and decorative hay bales are easy solutions.
Coordinate Color
Something to consider when decorating a porch is choosing colors to coordinate with the house exterior. This year I’m really loving how the white mums and green pumpkins look with our dark red brick and gray door. The same green and white colors in the door basket helps to tie the whole look together.
Simple Fall Entryway Ideas
I always look forward to decorating the entry table, because it’s the first thing I see when I come in the door. This year I’m using some large accessories and I’m loving this look so far.
Fresh flowers in a large basket take up one end of the table with a mix of camomile, safflowers and greenery. The trick is finding the right size container to fit inside the basket for the flowers. I’m using a simple bucket, although a wide mouth vase is a good option too.
My favorite addition to the entry table is a large vintage zinc bowl. Don’t you just love a bowl of white pumpkins? To cushion the pumpkins, I have a little bit of excelsior in the base, and to finish the arrangement I stuck in a few dried wheat stems.
Did you spot my little photo bomber? I love it when my sweet Sandy girl sneaks into photos.
In contrast to the larger accessories, a little fall grouping sits next to the lamp. Bright zinnias from the garden and a tiny oil painting are the finishing touches to the entry table.
Inside the front door I have a couple of picnic baskets that were begging for attention. Dried gourds and a plaid throw make a super easy arrangement.

Thank you so much Cecilia! I had so much fun changing up the fall colors on the porch this year!
Did my comment go through? Love everything about your porch Michelle! The numbers on the sidelight, the paint color , everything! Pinned! laura in Colorado
Thank you Laura! The paint color is SW Iron Ore which we used on the inside stair railing too.
I love living vicariously through your ideas. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much Cathy! I do a lot of that too, every time I thumb through a magazine or scroll through Pinterest! 😊
I love how this blog post is presented- with ideas that I feel I could definitely try at home. The basket on the front door is gorgeous! I love how you tied the ribbon.
Thank you Shawna! I love hassle free decorating and found that simple ideas just work best in our home.
Michelle your front porch is so pretty. I love gourds and the color your chose are perfect.
Who doesn’t love a vintage bowl and white pumpkins. Pinned!
Thank you so much for pinning Cindy and so happy you like our fall porch!
I really like how you placed a grapevine wreath around the base of the pumpkins, Michelle; great added texture and it really sets them off! Love all the Fall colors against your black door; so striking!
Thanks for noticing the grapevines, that I meant to mention in the post. They are actually a couple of wreaths that I placed under the pumpkins to keep them off the ground. I’m hoping that will keep them from rotting on the bottom with all the rain we’ll get this fall.
Michelle
I love the fall designs you have created. They are an inspiration, and that door basket is outstanding!!
Thank you Rachel! As long as I keep finding new ways to decorate it I’ll keep using it LOL!
Your porch and entryway look beautiful decked out for fall. I love how you added wheat to your bowl of white pumpkins.
Thank you Paula! The bowl of pumpkins is so simple and probably my favorite fall addition this year.
Everything is so beautiful, Michelle. I love your pretty front porch and yoru door basket. They really are such a fun and easy way to add seasonal touches to your home. Happy to be touring with you this week. Pinned!
Thank you Jen! I love inventing new ways to decorate the door basket for each season. Luckily it doesn’t take that many picks to make it look full. 😊
Everything looks wonderful! I’m like you, I love all the colors or pumpkins and never quite know which way I’m going to go until I come home with a car full either! Love how yours turned out!! Love the door basket!
I was that way with mums this year too LOL. I went with yellow and pink mums for the flower bed, but at the last minute decided on white for the porch.
Michelle I’m so glad you joined the tour this week! Your porch and entry are just beautiful! I love the black and white rocking stripe ribbon you used on your basket. Where is it from? It was also fun to catch a peek of your puppy on the stairs! Love your fall feels! Pinned
Thank you Kelly! I found the ribbon at JoAnn’s in the regular ribbon section instead of the seasonal. I’m so happy to be in this fall tour with so many beautiful homes and inspiring decor ideas. Thanks again for the invite sweet friend!
Michelle,
I LOVE all your Fall decor. My favorite may be your door basket, it’s gorgeous. Lovely hopping with you. 🙂
Thank you Libbie, I think the door basket is my favorite too and one of my best buys ever! So glad to be on this hop with you too!
Your porch and entry look so pretty. I love the basket you used on the front door and the basket in your entry. You have shared so many pretty ideas. Happy touring with you this week!
Thank you so much Kim! I’m keeping the decorating real simple this year although I may have to add just a few more pumpkins LOL!
Michele your home decorated for fall is just so pretty. I LOVE your front door painted the same color as the sidelights. What color is that? So fun touring together this week. Pinned!
Thank you so much! The color is SW Iron Ore. It’s also the color we used on the stair hand rail.
I loved your tour, Michelle! You have such a classic, timeless style. Your basket wreath is especially beautiful with that ticking ribbon, and I was admiring how your planters spill over into the pumpkins on the porch. The entryway is gorgeous too. Pinned!
Thank you so much Crissy! I have to admit I didn’t realize how big the coleus would grow over the summer. I even trimmed it back a few times, but I’m so happy it’s making a good show for fall now.😊
Michelle I love how you decorated your home for fall! It’s beautiful! And I love your front door with all the florals too. The contrast is beautiful!
Thank you Stacy! I’m so happy with the mums this year! At this point we’re just trying to keep them alive while waiting on fall temps to arrive.
Hi Michelle!
Wow! Your home is so inspiring. Your front porch is so pretty and I love the basket wreath you created. Your entry table is gorgeous with the zinc bowl and pumpkins. I pinned it to my fall board to share 🙂
xoxo
Thank you so much for pinning Jennifer! The zinc bowl is a lucky find! I can’t wait to use it during the holidays too!
The white & green is so fresh! Love your take on fall.
Thank you for the sweet comment Marie!
Michelle…I may be stealing that idea for how you put the ribbon around the basket!!!
I’m exciting news…my bottle neck gourds just started developing a bunch of late season gourds and I think I’m going to have my very own bowl of baby bottlenecks like you!!!
That is exciting news Jennifer! I can’t wait to see how you will display the gourds. So cool, that you can say you grew your own!
Michelle I love the bowl of pumpkins and your basket collection is amazing my friend, Pinned!
Thank you Ann, I’m having fun decorating for fall in different ways this year. Hugs!
Those funky green pumpkins on your porch are my FAVORITE! Along with the cutie gourd! Happy Fall!
Thanks Ana, and yes I think those green pumpkins are going to be a big hit this year! 😊
Your fall porch and entry is so beautiful Michelle! I love the green pumpkins. They make such a statement. I grew some last year and really loved them. Wish I had done it this year. Love the dried gourds and plaid blanket in the picnic basket. So simple but makes such a big statement. Lovely job!
Thank you so much Kim for your sweet comments! I wish we had room to grow pumpkins. I would be all over that LOL!
I felt the same way about our porchette too Michelle. This year I tried the different heights and what a huge difference! In years past I just threw pumpkins on the ground around the urns. Bleh. Loved all of your tips and the ribbon around your hanging basket. That’s still on my list of to do’s! Happy Fall friend.
Thank you Cindy! My biggest challenge is keeping those mums watered every day so they don’t dry out so fast. So much for all that rain that didn’t happen LOL!
My son said “keep the mums like that are now – dead. They look Halloweeny”. 🙄
Hey great minds think alike, that’s what my husband said LOL!
Every Single detail is gorgeous! I love the basket on the door and stacked pumpkins!
Such a beautiful porch and entry! I love all of the colors and textures you added with your fall touches. Your tips are great too. The basket you created for your door is gorgeous! So wonderful to be on this tour with you!
Thank you so much Lynne! The door basket is one of my best buys ever, and I love how it turned out this year!
We cannot wait for fall! It is by far our favorite season, and we can’t wait to host a first day of fall party this year. The entryway will be the key to success in this. We actually just wrapped up a hardwood floor resurfacing on our entryway, so now it’s time to get decorating. I know I have a whole month before this party, but I cannot wait to go out and get some camomile and safflowers! They’re really going to complete the look I’m going for. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas.
Your first day of fall party sounds like so much fun! Good luck with the party planning, that’s always my favorite part and the flowers of course! 😊
Beautiful, Michelle!! I LOVE those picnic baskets stacked on the floor. How pretty! The coleus plants look gorgeous with those neutral pumpkins. You decorate for fall in such a lovely way!
Thank you so much Rachel!
Hi Michelle – I love how you decorated the picnic baskets in your front entry. It’s adorable! Also I think that zinc bowl stole my heart.
Thank you so much Anna! Happy Fall!
