I look forward to experimenting with seasonal beverages. How about you? It must be my inner desire to be a bartender or mixologist. In any case, I love creating spin offs of classic cocktail recipes for special occasions. Sometimes I’m successful and sometimes not so much.
The most successful cocktails contain premium liquor, and by all means fresh ingredients. This apple cider whiskey sour is simple to make with just four main ingredients, and you can be the judge on how sweet or sour you want to make it.

Apple Cider Whiskey Sour Recipe
- 2 oz. rye whiskey
- 2 oz. apple cider
- 1 oz. fresh squeeze lemon juice
- 1/2 oz. simple syrup (optional)
- garnish with apple slice or cinnamon stick
Combine rye whiskey, apple cider, lemon juice and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake for about 10 seconds and pour into a glass with fresh ice.
For a festive fall presentation, garnish with an apple slice or cinnamon stick.
Recipe Notes
Note that I’m listing simple syrup as optional. Depending on the sweetness of the apple cider, you may not need to add the simple syrup. On the other hand you may want a 1/2 ounce to 1 ounce of simple syrup to find that perfect balance of sweet and sour.
To make your cocktail more aromatic garnish with fresh sprigs of thyme or rosemary. You can also keep the garnish simple with a slice or wedge of lemon.
By the way you don’t have to use rye whiskey for this recipe, sometimes I use bourbon. It’s up to you and what you prefer.
The apple cider whiskey sour also makes an excellent batch cocktail that you can make ahead. Combine your ingredients and store in an air tight bottle in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.
