I’m starting my day off by sharing a delicious apple shallot chutney recipe. This a quick and easy recipe with lots of savory flavors. I’m making a batch for a tasty appetizer, but there are lots of ways you can enjoy it.
What Is Chutney?
What is chutney? Chutney is a sauce or relish of Indian origin that is created with fruits or vegetables, sugar, spices, herbs and vinegar.
Thinking back, if I had only understood what chutney was when I was a kid I would have probably tried it. I always thought it was just something that adults ate at holidays and cocktail parties. Boy was I missing out!
I love all kinds of chutney, but when I’m making it, I like to keep it simple. No surprise there since I prefer simple recipes.
When describing this recipe I note the delicate sweetness of the apple complimented by shallots, aromatic spices, vinegar and a little kick from cayenne pepper.
Apple Shallot Chutney Recipe
- 2 cups chopped apples peeled and cored
- 1/2 cup chopped shallots
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon each of cumin, pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, and salt
Combine all ingredients in a sauce pan, then stir coating the apple pieces and shallots with the sugar, spices and vinegar.
Cook on medium high heat, stirring until it comes to a boil. Reduce heat to medium low, cover and cook for about 15 to 20 minutes stirring occasionally.
Remove the lid, stir and increase heat to medium to reduce the liquids to your liking. This may take another 10 to 15 minutes depending on how juicy the apples are. Remove from heat.
Transfer the chutney to a jar or bowl and allow to cool. Cover and place in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
Safe to store in the refrigerator for about a week.
Recipe Notes
In this recipe I’m using Honeycrisp apples because that’s what I had on hand and I needed to use them up. You can also use Granny Smith apples or a mix of varieties.
When chopping apples and shallots, consistency in size is the key. They will cook more evenly and the presentation will look prettier when serving.
If you prefer sweet over spicy omit the pepper flakes and cayenne pepper.
Ideas for Serving Apple Shallot Chutney
As an appetizer we love to serve apple shallot chutney on toasted bread rounds with cheese. This time we’re pairing a sharp white cheddar which compliments the sweet and spiciness of the chutney.
Lightly puree apple shallot chutney for a jam like texture and spread on a block of cream cheese. Enjoy with crackers.
You can also try this recipe as a delicious relish with marinated flank steak, lamb chops or grilled pork tenderloin. Just typing that out is making my mouth water.
