How To Paint Wicker And Rattan. I’m so happy to share an easy project with you today, on how to update or change the color of wicker or rattan. You can apply this process to woven baskets, trays and yes, even a wicker lampshade.
How To Paint Wicker Or Rattan
I purchased a natural wicker lampshade to go with a pretty creamy ceramic lamp several months ago. I liked the the simple monochromatic look at first, but after awhile I realized it wasn’t working in this space.
You know me, I hate admitting I’m wrong when a brilliant idea fails. I also don’t like spending extra money when I don’t have to. I thought about shopping for another lampshade, then decided to try darkening the wicker with paint.
Painting wicker is a quick and easy process, and I think the results can be very impressive. The spray paint I’m using is Krylon paint plus primer in khaki, which to me is close to a medium to light brown.
Paint Supplies
- spray paint
- craft paint
- chip brush
Updating A Wicker Lamp Shade
To change the color of this new wicker lampshade I decided to use spray paint. Most of the time hand painting is my first choice, but in this case I wanted that even coverage that spray painting provides.
When spray painting, remember to always follow the manufacturer’s directions working in a well ventilated area. You will also want to protect your work surface with a drop cloth, recycled boxes or paper.
I suggest starting on the bottom side of your basket or in this case the inside of the lampshade. Starting on the bottom side is a good way to practice your paint strokes, and see if you are happy with the color.
Apply the spray paint in even strokes, and allow the paint to dry before flipping it over. Brands may differ with their drying times, so be sure to read those directions before handling.
After the spray paint is completely dry on all sides, you can add some highlights with craft paint. This is an optional step, but I think it is a pretty way to bring out the details in the wicker.
Using a chip brush, apply craft paints in subtle contrasting colors on the ridges. I’m blending two FolkArt colors in coffee latte and linen toile, then applying the craft paint sparingly with a light hand.
More Makeover Inspiration
If this were a wicker basket or a rattan tray, I might make the highlights a little more bold. Here is a tray I practiced on using the same process as above.

Can you believe what a difference the contrast in color makes with this lamp? I feel that the look is much more sophisticated and fits right in the colors of the room. Wicker and rattan also adds a warm texture into a space, making it look and feel more inviting.
The best part of this project is that my only cost is a can of spray paint and a little bit of my time. Thank you for visiting today. I hope you you are finding inexpensive ways to make your home look and feel more inviting too!
Cheers!
