Simple Felt Woodland Animal Christmas Ornaments. See how easy it is to make your own felt ornaments to add to your Christmas tree or to use as gift toppers. I always appreciate anything that is handmade. I’m guessing your friends and family will appreciate these little ornaments too.
Simple Felt Woodland Animal Christmas Ornaments
Last year I was hooked on felt ornaments, making lots of felt pine trees and navy birds. This year I’m expanding my ornament project to include five woodland animals.
These animal shapes are very simple, which makes them quick and easy to add a few stitches or fun details. After you make some, it will be up to you give them away or keep them for yourself. I’m doing a little of both.

How To Make Felt Woodland Animal Ornaments
When shopping for felt, there are different types that you can use, but I always prefer wool or a wool blend felt. To me wool felt is just a little bit softer than the poly felt or recycled plastic felt, and I think wool felt has a prettier finish too. Something to consider when shopping for supplies.
I played around drawing animals until I had five with very simple shapes. I think the bear is my favorite and is no doubt the easiest one to cut out. To see a more extensive tutorial click on my post, Easy Embroidered Felt Christmas Ornaments.
As far as the embroidery goes, the stitches are quite simple too. On the fox, bear and owl the stitches highlight just enough features that you know what kind of animal they are. Of course leave it up to my grandson to say my owl doesn’t look much like an owl. Well I guess I can’t win everyone over with my designs, so next year I’ll have to try harder.
Since the bird and deer have distinct shapes I chose a design for the center of each one. I’m really loving how the pine branch and pine cone looks on the deer. These were the quickest to finish.
Last year, I concentrated on the blanket stitch as a decorative border. This year to save time I’m using a whip stitch around the edge of each one. Because the ornaments are so small it only takes a very small amount of polly fill in each one. It’s just enough to give them a bit of dimension.
To create a hanger for the felt ornaments I’m using silver embroidery thread with a knot at the top.
If I have time I may try a squirrel and a raccoon. They should be an interesting pair to add to the collection.
Tree Ornaments or Gift Topper
This years woodland theme tree is all for the kids especially the grand littles. Yesterday they wanted to look and touch every single ornament on the tree. Most of the breakable decorations are out of their reach, so luckily I don’t have to worry about the kids touching the felt or shatterproof ornaments.
A few extra felt ornaments are waiting for some online orders to arrive, then I’ll use them as gifts toppers. It’s like getting two presets in one. 😉
Speaking of the shatterproof ornaments, be sure to check out my post, Easy Christmas Ornament Makeover With Paint. It’s an easy project to update all kinds of old ornaments or create a theme with color.
