October Design Challenge
Welcome to our indoor/outdoor fall to Thanksgiving tablescapes challenge! This month our host Cindy of County Road 407 is selecting an image from Sanctuary Home Decor. I think you’ll agree Karen’s outdoor rustic space is ideal for feeling closer to nature.

Charming Rustic Fall Al Fresco Tablescape Ideas
Do you enjoy dining outdoors? We sure do, especially now that our weather is calming down. Sometimes it’s a quick throw together, and other times I create a special tablescape for family with just a little effort. In my post, I’ll share how to pull together a charming rustic fall al fresco tablescape like this, in no time at all.

Taking inspiration from our design challenge photo, I’m gathering the following items for our al fresco table setting.
- metal container for a centerpiece
- pumpkins
- foraged leaves
- table runner
- woven placemats or chargers
- lighting or candles
Rustic Fall Centerpiece With Pumpkins
Instead of a centerpiece with fall branches, and pumpkins down the center of the table, I’m combining everything into one arrangement. Karen’s old milk can in the inspo photo gave me the idea of using a vintage French zinc dish tub for the base of my centerpiece.

To create my centerpiece, I’m first adding pinecones in the bottom of the wide tub as filler. Next is a layer of excelsior (narrow wood shavings), and dried herb stems that gave up during our scorching summer. On top of all of that, I’m mixing together white baby boo pumpkins and yellow striped tiger pumpkins. For the final touch, I’m inserting leaves from our pecan tree to fill in a few gaps.

Tablescape With Layers
The first layer I’m adding to our round patio table is a table runner. You may not be able to tell, but it is actually a throw blanket. I made it a few years ago from a long piece of dark blue flannel with a herringbone weave. I kept the frayed salvage sides as is, so all I had to do was hem each end, and add pompoms.

I like using a table runner to soften the hard edges of the table. It also adds a layer of color that compliments the centerpiece. At each place setting woven chargers create an additional layer to the table with rustic texture under our classic white plates.

The Little Details
Sometimes it’s the little details, that I enjoy playing around with the most. The glass votive candle holders with the woven cane wrap remind me of the glassware on Karen’s table. A few preserved fall leaves under each candle gives them a cozy fall feel.

Cloth napkins set on the plates look a bit like blue denim, which I think goes so well with the flannel table runner. To spruce them up, I’m adding rust striped ribbon, tucking dried wheat stalks under the knot. Such a simple addition, and now they look a bit more charming and festive.
