Kitchen Cabinet Makeover Reveal. Today I’m so happy to finally be sharing our kitchen makeover. This has been a long time coming, and the only thing I regret is not painting our kitchen cabinets sooner.
Kitchen Cabinet Makeover Reveal
At about the 20 year mark of living with dark wood cabinets in our home, I decided I was ready for color. We have a lot of brown, with wood cabinets, dark counter tops, wood floors and even a brown leather sofa in the adjoining family room. That’s a lot of brown!
I’m not sure why it felt like such a big deal to paint the cabinets. Now I look back, and think, what was I so worried about. I’m only sharing this, because if you’re waiting for that little nudge to make a similar decision, I say go for it.
After finally making the decision to paint, the next big hurdle was finding the right color. The Mister didn’t want to give up his granite counter top, so I needed a color to compliment the travertine backsplash and counters.
For months, I had a bunch of green paint samples sticking to the cabinets. Then we sorted it down to three, and then the winner, which ended up being “Retreat” by Sherwin Williams. (Emerald, urethane trim enamel, satin finish.) This is a muted green with undertones of blue and gray.
I feel like we are really going to enjoy this medium green, and I’m going to have fun experimenting with other colors in the kitchen too. So far, I can tell Retreat plays well with brown, black, blue, gray, peachy pink and soft orange colors.
By the way the kitchen was professionally painted, and not a DIY project. I have painted bathroom vanities, but the kitchen had to be absolutely flawless, a big selling point with the Mister.
Cabinet and accent wall Changes
Before painting, we hired a carpenter to add wood panels with simple trim around three sides of the island, and cabinet ends. I love the unassuming Shaker style trim which is very practical and perfect for our small kitchen.
New quarter round moulding around all the bottom of the cabinets is also a welcome update. They were showing a lot of wear and needed replacing.
The former accent navy wall running under the bar has new wood panels and trim as well. This sounds funny, but I feel like this wall finally looks complete. Amazing how much small details can make a room.
Instead of painting the new wood panels white like the doors and other trim in the house, I went with our wall color, Dover White by Sherwin Williams. Now this wall flows beautifully from kitchen to family room and around into the foyer.
Styling The Counters
Now that the dark brown cabinets are gone, I’m eager to restyle my counters. I’m already playing around with one corner adding a vintage gym basket to hold bread boards and cook books.
Hopefully my local antique mall will have what I’m looking for. I’m anxious to find a large bowl for fruit, some crocks, small baskets, a painting to lean on the counter and maybe a lamp. Ultimately I want a kitchen with a cottage feel that is warm and inviting. Can you picture it too?

For weeks I’ve been scanning Pinterest and magazines for styling ideas while getting over a horrible upper respiratory infection. Now I’m ready to take action, but I’m so happy to share what I have so far with you. If you have suggestions for my “new” kitchen let me know. I’m hungry for ideas.
I will be sharing more views of the kitchen, some cabinet reorganization and other small updates with you soon. Thanks so much for stopping by today for this quick look at our cabinet makeover reveal.
Cheers!

I love the new cabinets! The color is perfect and makes your granite and backsplash look brand new! You might remember that I’ve hated our kitchen color for years (bright blue) so we painted it green a couple of months ago. I LOVE IT! I bet you smile everyday when you walk in there. It’s beautiful!
Michelle Meyer says
Yes I’m so happy with it! I must have missed that post, because I didn’t realize you painted it. How exciting, I can’t wait to see!

Looks great….good choice of colour. A suggestion….I have the same type of corner pantry door that you have and when my kitchen cabinets were painted, the white door stood out too. Your eye always travels to the lightest thing in the room. Paint it out the same colour as your cabinets and it offers a really finished look to the room…….almost like another piece of cabinet door. I did it over 10 years ago and still very happy with the look. Happy Spring!

Hi Gwyn, I’m so happy you stopped by, and appreciate the suggestion so much! I was kinda keeping the idea of painting the pantry in the back of my mind, and now you have given me the confirmation I needed. Happy Spring and thank you!

My wife and I love the green cabinet, backsplash, and granite color combination. We started our kitchen remodel with the green cabinets and now we’re looking for countertops. Do you recall what color granite you have?
Michelle Meyer says
Thank you for the inquiry. Our countertops were updated about 13 years ago. I wish I still had that information to share with you, but I don’t. I hope you find something very pretty and enjoy your updated kitchen!
