Today I’m sharing an easy DIY fence herb garden that I just installed. This simple project is an excellent way to kick start my spring gardening. I’m also sharing how I organized this little backyard corner, and added spring color with flowers.

March Pinterest Challenge
It’s time for our March Pinterest challenge, and this month we are exploring ideas on container gardening and unique ways to display flowers.
If this is your first time to join us for a Pinterest challenge, this is how it works. Our host Cindy over at County Road 407, selects a photo for us to recreate, and each participant puts their own spin on the photo.
The best part is seeing how everyone interprets the image, and we always have an interesting variety. Be sure to click through all the links at the end of my post.

If you’re popping over from Bluesky at Home, welcome to Thistle Key Lane. I sure enjoyed seeing all of Carol’s plants and pretty containers in her lovely home.
Our photo inspiration this month is from Carlene of Organized Clutter featuring her junk garden tour. Be sure to click over to see how she works her vintage collections and farm implements into her surrounding gardens and flower beds.
Easy DIY Fence Herb Garden
I’ve got to say I’m envious of Carlene’s beautiful flowers. Her garden tour is inspiring me to spruce up this little corner of our back yard. Here’s a list of what I’m focusing on from the inspiration photo.
- fence
- flowers
- watering can
- buckets
- pretty spring color
- flower pots
Creating A Herb Garden on A Fence
Here’s a before photo of this corner I’m updating. We recently had our cedar fence painted, so some of the junk that was in this corner was already removed before I could run out and take a photo.
When I first told the Mister about my herb garden plan, he wasn’t too keen on the idea of a bunch of holes in his fence. Then I showed him the terracotta pot hooks, and he put his stamp of approval on my little project. Haha I knew he would!
I’m mean who doesn’t love fresh herbs through out the spring and summer. Plus having the herb pots on the fence saves space on the patio, and keeps them out of the way.
Here’s what you’ll need for a fence herb garden.
- terracotta pot hangers
- screwdriver
- 6 inch terracotta pots
- 8 inch terra cotta pots
- potting soil
- variety of herbs
When using these metal pot hooks you will need terracotta pots with a lip around the top. Just follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install the hooks, then you are ready to hang your potted herbs. I’m using one 8″ pot in the center and the rest are 6″ pots.
Here’s my tip on keeping soil from falling out of the bottom of your flower pot. Before filling the pot with soil, line the inside bottom with a piece of paper towel. This will allow water to drain out, while keeping your soil in place.
Speaking of watering, having these herbs about half way up of the fence is a good height for watering. Just something to consider when you’re planning your fence herb garden.
So far I’m starting out with five herbs, lemon thyme, cilantro, basil, rosemary and Italian parsley. I also plan on adding chives, and dill. Hopefully our local nursery will have them this week. Luckily I have extra hooks, and the space to add them on the fence.
I’m really looking forward to clipping herbs to bring indoors, which makes my kitchen smell fabulous. Grow baby grow!
Organizing My Herb Garden Space
To organize this corner, I’m using a couple of small metal trash cans for storage. One holds bird seed, suet cakes and woodpecker cakes. The other holds wood chips for the Mister’s grill. Click here for trash cans like these.
I also gathered all the flower pots that I had scattered around the patio, and stacked them in the corner. Even when the pots are empty, I still think they look pretty mixed in with flowers.
Eventually I would like to have a potting table or bench for this space. I’m looking for a sturdy old bench with a little character instead of buying something new.
Petunias and Geraniums
Is there anything more cheerful than pink petunias and geraniums? Geraniums were my mom’s favorite, and I always think of her when I see them. I just couldn’t resist these bright blooms, and how much color they add to this corner.
I’m so happy to turn this eyesore of a corner into a clean functioning space. With this little project complete, I’m really motivated to get on with the rest of our spring flower planting. I’m looking for lots more color around the patio area that will bring in the butterflies and humming birds.

We all have an ugly spot in our backyard that needs help and this is the perfect inspiration! Actually, we have 2 ugly spots that need some sincere TLC. You’ve got me motivated now! Your corner is undergone a beautiful transformation! And I love the pots hanging on the fence. I’ve always wanted to hang plants from our fence and the Mister has always said no. I bet he’d go for those pot holders though! Thank you for joining in. I love this post! pinned

Yes the Misters can be picky about those kinds of things and I totally get it. I’m so excited about having herbs this years. Last year everything died due to the brutal heat, but I’m being optimistic this year! 😊

What an ingenious way to have a potting area and keep everything dry and organized!!! Looks like a great spot for some lovely herbs to brighten many warm weather feasts (and maybe a few cocktails) all Summer long.
Michelle Meyer says
I like your thinking about adding herbs to cocktails Diane! Drinks are at 5! 😊

I love the way you dressed up this whole area, Michelle. It looks so good! Having fresh herbs on hand when you’re cooking always feels like the biggest treat and I can’t wait to try this too. On a side note, I’m losing it in the best possible way over your geraniums. We never get them in that color and they usually don’t arrive until the summer season. I’m definitely going to keep an eye out because I love yours and what a sweet way to honor your Mom too! Sending you tons of hugs sweet friend, CoCo
Michelle Meyer says
The geraniums are exceptional this year. I found these at Lowe’s so you might check your area too. Thanks for the sweet comments CoCo!

What a fun update to your little corner, Michelle! Those hangers are so smart; what a brilliant idea. You are going to love being able to clip fresh herbs anytime you want; enjoy!
Michelle Meyer says
Thank you Lora! Hope spring finds you soon!

Michelle, you found a great way to jazz up this corner. I love the hooks; they are fabulous. I will have to get a few of these. The metal trashcans are also a great way to store your supplies for gardening.
Michelle Meyer says
Thank you Wendy! Yep I completely forgot to mention my garden supplies are in the smallest metal can LOL!

Michelle, I love how your hanging pots look on the fence! Great idea!! I’ve thought of doing a little gardening on the fence with a large hanging basket; I’ll have to look for the style of clamping hook you shared.
Funny, I get our yard all cleaned up and the bags of different soils all put in one area, then I need one (or more) in another place to pot something up. Plus we have a sprinkler issue with one of our oak trees which ate a sprinkler main valve (grew around it; it’s an inherited-with-the-house issue) so we have hoses snakes all over the yard again. It does feel really good to get an area cleaned up!
Enjoy your wonderful herbs and geraniums. I bought several when my MIL and I drove up to Oklahoma over our spring break.
Happy Easter to you and your family,
Barb 🙂
Michelle Meyer says
You are right Barb, gardening clean up is constant work. Hope you get your sprinklers working before the summer heat hits! Happy Easter to you and your family too!

How have I never heard of these pot hangers. I love this idea and can’t wait to get some of these hangers. Thanks for all your tips.

I’m pretty excited to find these hooks too, and to be growing herbs again! Happy Spring Rachel!

Michelle, those hooks are brilliant! I love this genius way to have herbs even if you don’t have garden space! Thanks for sharing!
Michelle Meyer says
Thank you Cindy! Who knew it would be so easy to create this little herb garden. 😊

This is genius. I love your hanging herb garden and your little gardening corner. Perfect.
Michelle Meyer says
Thanks Marty! Hope your garden is coming along too!

Michelle, what an awesome idea. I’ve never heard of Terra cotta pot hangers. We love our herb garden, but I wouldn’t mind some more pots to add to the fence. It definitely dresses up an unused corner.
Michelle Meyer says
Thank you Carol! They are so easy to install and use. Great way to add color with flowering pots too!
