Fall Baking

Is there anything better in the fall, than filling your kitchen with the aroma of baking, especially when it involves cinnamon? I’m appreciating those scents more this fall, because there wasn’t a whole lot of baking going on over the summer. It’s like oh yeah, that’s what baking from scratch is supposed to smell like. I remember now!

I’m adding the word spiced to my applesauce bread title, because it’s that little addition of nutmeg, cloves and allspice mingling with the cinnamon that makes this bread so delish.

Even if you’re not a big baker, add this simple recipe to your file or Pinterest board. I know that you and your family will love it.

Spiced Applesauce Bread Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1-1/3 cups flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tbs. ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp. allspice
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup vegetable or canola oil
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350° F. Prepare pan by lining it with parchment paper or use baking spray.
  2. Combine all dry ingredients – flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, spices and brown sugar.
  3. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add wet ingredients – eggs, applesauce and oil.
  4. Mix with a spoon until just combined. Stir in chopped walnuts last.
  5. Spoon into the prepared loaf pan.
  6. Bake on center rack for 50 to 60 minutes. Test by inserting a wood screw into the split crust.
  7. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes. Remove from pan and allow to cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Recipe Notes:

If you want a slightly sweeter tasting bread, then you can substitute regular applesauce instead of unsweetened. You can also substitute pecans for the walnuts or leave out nuts completely.

Store bread in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to a week or you can also freeze it. Try these bread recipes too, Blueberry Orange Bread and Sweet Potato Bread.
