A twist on a classic Cocktail
If you enjoy a good old fashioned cocktail, then this blackberry bourbon smash cocktail is well worth a try.
I love serving seasonal cocktails that I know my guest will love, and I also enjoy experimenting with recipes. This is when I pretend to be a mixologist of sorts, and so far no complaints, so I guess I’m doing something right.
The basic recipe includes muddled fresh mint, blackberries and simple syrup, then add bourbon. Pretty simple!
For my version, I’m skipping the mint and adding cardamon bitters. It’s a subtle departure from what we think of as a basic recipe, but cardamon adds an interesting flavor and a wonderful aroma.
Cardamon’s scent is a mix of light floral, citrus and a hit of nutmeg, which to me makes it a wee bit spicy. Add that to blackberries and bourbon, and you can bet you have a winning combination.
Now, I have to tell you that I’m really not all that clever when it comes to mixology. After forgetting to buy mint at the grocery store I felt like I needed to come up with an another flavor point, and picked cardamon as an experiment.
I have several bitters to choose from, and I’m so glad I tried the cardamon. What can I say, sometimes I just get lucky. How’s that for turning a negative into a positive.
Blackberry Bourbon Smash Cocktail Recipe
- 3 to 5 blackberries
- 1 ounce simple syrup or blackberry simple syrup
- 3 ounces of bourbon
- 4 to 5 dashes of cardamon bitters
Muddle blackberries in the simple syrup, then add bourbon and bitters. Give it a little stir, and add ice cubes. Garnish with extra blackberries.
Recipe Notes
Of course you make this cocktail with or without blackberry simple syrup. I recommend trying it with your own homemade blackberry simple syrup to enhance those flavors in your cocktail. Here’s a recipe for infusing your simple syrup with blackberries.
Blackberry Simple Syrup
Stir together 1 cup of water, 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of blackberries in a a small sauce pan. Bring to a boil over medium high heat, then simmer until all the sugar dissolves.
Remove from heat and mash blackberries. When completely cool, pour through a sieve into a bowl. Then you can transfer into a jar or bottle with a lid, and store in the fridge for a couple of weeks.
If you prefer, make a small batch with 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup blackberries.
