April Design Challenge
Welcome to the new Design Challenge, formerly the Pinterest Challenge. Just as before, our host Cindy of County Road 407, selects an image for us to recreate, and each blogger will put their own spin on the photo. Be sure to check out my friends Rachel of The Ponds Farmhouse and Barb of French Ethereal who come before and after me in our hop.
Our focus this month is plants and our inspiration comes from Debra of Common Ground. Debra’s talents for arranging vignettes are never ending. Plus there’s always that unexpected element she adds, that makes them special.
Here’s what I’m pulling from the inspiration photo to create a vignette for my kitchen or family room.
- wire basket
- flowers
- ribbon
- white chair
- number tag
How To Decorate With A Wire Basket
For my design challenge spin, I’m focusing first on the wire basket, and how I can decorate with it. For a couple of years I have used this vintage locker basket on my counter holding bread boards and cookbooks. See my post here for photos.
Creating A Vignette With A Wire Basket
Now, I’m using the wire basket to create a spring to summer vignette, that I can display in the kitchen on a chair or in the family room. Since my potted ferns are too big for this locker basket, I’m substituting them for a vintage jar holding a bundle of flowers. Those little chamomile blooms are aways so sweet and charming.
Did you notice the cute metal tray in our inspiration photo that Debra is using as a backdrop? I love her idea, but didn’t have anything similar. So I’m using a bread board instead. It fills in that blank space so the flowers don’t look lost.
Next, I’m squeezing in a large conch shell, a pretty polished shell, and a few star fish. I love adding shells into my decor, and this is an easy way to group them together. If you don’t have shells, think of other items you can display such as mini terracotta pots, garden items, vintage dishes or bottles.
To finish the basket vignette, I’m adding a bow with none other than of one of my favorite patterns…gingham! Oh and remember the cute number tag in the inspo photo? Well this locker basket already has one. 😉
Quirky Decorating With Wire Baskets
I have a tendency to decorate with unexpected items in our home. On a whim, I’m trying out the wire locker basket with the chamomile flowers and shells (minus the bread board) in the family room. I’m loving this quirky display on our rattan bar cart. Our family room is a casual space, and rustic pieces like the wire basket blend right in with our other vintage items.
After trying the basket vignette on the bar cart, I think it’s going to reside here most of the summer. That way I can liven up the room, by switching out the flowers to bring in seasonal colors. I can also add to the display with other found items I may collect over the summer.
Don’t forget to follow Thistle Key Lane on Pinterest, where the boards are up to date with inspiration that you can use right now!

Michelle, I love the chamomile flowers in the basket! In the kitchen looked nice, but I think the bar cart is adorable!! I forget to use the shells I have and that makes me think I should redo our little corners in the kitchen for summer… 😉 Love those old school wire baskets… Very pretty vignettes!!
Happily pinning (always!),
Barb 🙂
Thanks so much for pinning Barb! Shells are so fun to decorate with and brings back great memories of collecting them!
Isn’t it exciting to have something perfect for a DC/PC?! I think your basket was an excellent choice, and how fun to be able to move it around to different cozy spots. I’ve always loved the little white stool, so it looks fantastic there as well. You may have wanted plates, but the shells look different (which I love) and will look great all summer long. I’m always grateful that you join in. pinned
Thank you so much Cindy! You picked an excellent inspo photo, so I was very excited to use that cute basket! I always look forward to these challenges, and appreciate you so much!! Hugs!
Love your take on this challenge, Michelle! A locker basket with numbers is the perfect idea:) And the shells totally personalizes it with your vibe. Great creativity, as always! I’m heading out to my storage area for an old wire basket I haven’t been using now;)
Thanks so much Lora! I would love to see your storage area, and the fabulous finds you collect!
Michelle, your locker basket display is so cute for the season! I love the large conch shell, along with the other items you used!
Thank you Cindy! I’m motivated to see what other combinations I can add to the basket!
