Are you ready for the Handcrafted Society’s August challenge? Excellent, me too! If you are new to my blog, the Handcrafted Society is simply a group of bloggers who share a love for detail and craftsmanship. Each month we take our assigned medium and set our creative minds to work.
This month we are using frames as our assigned medium. Be sure to check out the links and photos at the end of my post to see what my friends are sharing too. This sweet group of ladies always have the most fantastic ideas. You can also check out my HS project from last August by clicking on my post DIY Faux Acorns.
DIY Vintage Frame Wreath With Feathers
I’m a big admirer of frame wreaths, so for our challenge this month I’m testing my skills by creating one for an early fall display. This vintage frame I believe dates back to the 1930s with loads of character and a beautiful aged patina. The wood is a little warped so no longer a candidate for holding glass, but pretty darn perfect for making a wreath.

- vintage frame
- grapevine wreath
- zip ties
- pheasant feathers
- ribbon
- scissors
- dried bunny tail grass
Combining A Frame and Grapevine To Create a Wreath
For this wreath, I’m using two parts of a grapevine wreath leftover from a previous project, and using a zip tie to hold the two together. Then I’m using an additional zip tie to attach the grapevine to the side of the frame.
I’m choosing the left side of the frame to attach the grapevine wreath. However you can choose a corner or turn the frame horizontally placing the grapevine at the top. It’s up to you, to make it work for your decor.
Adding Feathers and Ribbon
Next you can insert a variety of feathers in between the open spaces of the grapevine at different angles. The feathers I have are somewhat the same length, but you can try different sizes to see what looks best.
To cover up the zip ties I’m using a linen ribbon leftover from another wreath project. If you happen to have long scraps of linen it is very easy to turn those scraps into ribbons by tearing lengths of the fabric. The frayed edges of the ribbon adds to the rustic look of the grapevines and vintage frame. To see another wreath with this linen fabric, click over to my post Summer To Fall Rag Wreath.
That Something Extra
At this point I could leave the wreath as is, but instead I’m adding a little something extra. Simple neutral colored bunny tail grass inserted above, and below the bow gives the wreath just the right amount of soft texture and interest it needed. I added about seven of the bunny tail stems, that allows the detail of the pheasant feathers to be the focal point.
You may notice on this project, that I did not use any hot glue. That way if I want to recycle or update the wreath, I have the option of reusing different components.
Displaying A Frame Wreath
My vintage frame wreath with feathers is for indoor display only. I’m loving the simplicity of the wreath, and the way the vintage frame gives the whole look more prominence.
I’m currently displaying the frame wreath on a mirror, right off the foyer in the living room. However for photography purposes, I’m sharing extra photos of the wreath hanging on the wall. I’m not sure my photos of the wreath on the mirror really do it justice, and I want you to be able to see the details up close.
By the way, the mirror I’m displaying the wreath on is a vintage repurposed project. At one time it was a glass tray that fit on top of a coffee table that my mom converted into a mirror more than 50 years ago. How’s that for recycling and repurposing LOL?
Fall is far from arriving here in Texas, but I think this wreath is a pretty way to start the transition from summer to fall decor. After all, these colors have all the upcoming fall feels that I’m looking forward to with September just around the corner. What do you think?

This is amazing, Michelle! I love the frame you chose and how the feathers and grapevine wreath add such pretty layers of texture. It’s crazy hot in Florida so I didn’t think I’d be ready for Fall any time soon but this post is definitely putting me in the spirit. Sending you lots of hugs, CoCo
I know what you mean. It’s so hard to think about fall when you know it’s not going to cool off until sometime in October! Thanks for the sweet comments CoCo! Sending you hugs too!!
Hi Michelle! Your fall wreath turned out so beautiful! The feathers and ribbon pair perfectly with the vintage frame, and I love how you incorporated the grape vine! Pinning now because I have an oval vintage frame I’ve been wanting to do this with! Enjoy your gorgeous wreath!
Oh I can’t wait to see your vintage oval frame Donna! I hope you will share it in a post! Hugs!
The feathers and pussy willow are perfect with the frame and the grapevine for fall! And I love how you hung it on a mirror. So creative!
Thank you Missy! I’m loving how it looks much more full and lush on the mirror!
You did it! You win! I’ve been prophesying that I am to ready to let go of summer yet — fall can wait for her turn. Your wreath won me over!!! I am in love with it. But especially that it is still light ad airy — feels like fall is conceding a bit of time for warm weather still.
You always, always have such wonderful projects. This month did NOT disappoint!
Thank you so much Diane for the sweet remarks! It’s so hard to think about fall right now, that’s why I have to transition ever so slowly. 😉
I love what you did with the frame and hanging it on another frame with a mirror is genius! Very creative.
Thank you Lynn! The mirror definitely makes it look more full! Hugs!
Hi Michelle – This has me feeling like I am almost ready for fall. Although I love summer – the idea of cooler weather and warmer color tones is starting to appeal to me. I love your project for its simplicity and elegance. Your idea of hanging your frame on a mirror in the foyer is perfect. Also -I always love your photography. It’s fun to participate in the HCS with you.
Thank you Anna! I enjoy your fantastic projects and photography as well! Our next challenge should be pretty interesting! 😉 Hugs!
