DIY Faux Acorns. August is here, and even though it feels like summer is never going to end, I’m already anticipating how I’m going to be decorating for fall. If you are starting to lean in that direction too, then you will love this simple DIY faux acorns craft I’m sharing today.

Handcrafted Society
It’s time for our August Handcrafted Society get together. If you are wondering what the Handcrafted Society is all about. Quite simply, it’s a group of bloggers who share a love for detail and craftsmanship.
We challenge ourselves each month to take an assigned medium or theme to create whatever our heart desires. This month we have ten bloggers sharing rope or twine craft projects. Be sure to check out all the links, and photos at the end of my post for everyone participating this month. There’s something for everyone at every skill level.

DIY Faux Acorns
For my Handcrafted Society challenge this month I’m using jute twine to create a cap for wood acorns. These faux acorns remind me of bur oak acorns, which are large with oversized acorn caps.
What’s fun about this project is that you can go ahead and make them now, before your fall activities take over. Here’s a list of supplies you’ll need to make faux acorns that you can use in your fall decor.
Supplies and Shopping links
- jute twine
- wooden eggs
- craft paint light brown and dark brown
- craft paint brush or sponge brush
- glue gun and glue sticks
- scissors
- silicone finger protectors
- First apply craft paint to your wooden eggs with a craft brush. I’m using a light brown craft paint covering each wooden egg.
- When the paint is dry you can start attaching the jute twine to the egg to create the acorn cap. I’m starting at the middle of the egg using my hot glue gun to secure the twine. (Be sure to wear silicone finger protectors if you have them.) Keep gluing and wrapping until you complete the cap then trim the twine with scissors.
- Once all the twine acorn caps are complete it’s time to apply a little dark brown paint to the twine. You can also touch up any paint on the wood section if you think it needs it.
When deciding on the best fall look for your home, you can paint these wood acorns in any shade you like. I’m loving the interesting contrast between the dark twine cap and the lighter acorn color, but you may wish to leave the twine as is.
I chose wooden eggs because I like their shape, and their weight feels more solid or durable. Although, you can also make these acorns using plastic eggs. It’s all up to you.
How To Decorate With Faux Acorns
I’m thinking of lots of ways to decorate with these large faux acorns for fall. When you consider all the ways we use pine cones in our fall decorating, you can pretty much use these oversized acorns the same way.
- display in a bowl or shallow dish
- pile them in a small basket
- add acorns to a wreath
- mix with pine cones and dried gourds
- add them to a fall vignette
- use as place cards with guest names
- display in a jar
- arrange around a candle
- under a cloche
- turn them into acorn ornaments
