Summer Cottage Family Room Styling. Today I’m sharing our family room with simple summer decor and mixing classic and cottage styles. The look invites you to kick off your shoes and get comfortable.
Summer Cottage Family Room Styling
I have been gravitating to a cottage style home, and I feel like I have not only settled right in, but found my true style. My confirmation of that realization was when I recently had a color analysis, finding out that my color palette is muted soft autumn.
Maybe that’s why I am gravitating to natural earth tones and soft muted colors. That may sound kinda weird, but it was a true aha moment for me. As much as I love vibrant colors they just don’t work as well for me or in my decor for that matter.
Cozy Reading Nook
No matter what season of the year we are in, this armchair and ottoman remain the most cozy. This is the ideal corner for reading, working on my laptop, and oh yes napping.
One of my best decorating decisions was adding a narrow table behind the chair. I was so worried it would look too crowded, but it actually makes the space more complete and inviting.
Mixing Neutrals and Wood Tones
We have lots of neutral colors and wood tones in the family room. After replacing our dark brown sofa with a lighter one, and having our kitchen cabinets painted, the whole atmosphere changed. The painted cabinets also completed the cottage feel I was so aiming for. If you missed the post click here for the kitchen before and after photos.
The light colored rattan bar cart, distressed credenza and painted kitchen table helps to balance the darker wood pieces. The rattan bar stools also adds to the variety of wood tones.
Natural Elements
To me natural elements are what makes a room so interesting. In the summer, I love mixing a few shells, woven trays, clay pots, wood bowls and of course plants.
Our family room with it sunny southern exposure is the best room in the house for plants. As long as I remember to water them, my plants stay happy.
Vintage Accents
Around the room I have various vintage accents that add to the cottage feel. Some are family pieces belonging to my parents or grandparents. Two of my favorites include the antique tea box on the mantel and the horse figurine.
More collections on the bar cart add interest by mixing vintage metals and glass pieces with everyday items. New additions above the cart include the small frames holding a antique flower illustration and below its scientific botanical description from a book. I love how they look next to the abstract print.
Flowers
Fresh flowers are an indulgence that I never feel guilty about. I love bringing in little pops of color and greenery. No mater what your style may be I always feel that flowers makes a room seem a little more special and loved.
These delicate ranunculus are always a favorite and I’m loving the peach and pink color combination. They pick up some of the same colors in the art above.
Muted Shades And Patterns
I still believe one of the easiest ways to create a cottage feel to a room is with muted shades and patterns. The area rug with soft shades of gray and creamy goes easily with almost any muted shade.
Right now I’m using pillow covers in soft teal, blue and off white in a mix of patterns. I love trying out different combinations with florals, stripes and geometrics. Nothing is too matchy-matchy. The shades are all a little different, however because they are muted they seem to blend together.
