Today I’m sharing an advent calendar with bags and printable numbers. This is one of those make now projects, so you’ll be ready when the first of December rolls around. Making an advent calendar is becoming one of my favorite projects I look forward to, and it’s a fun challenge coming up with something new every year.
If you’re a big kid at heart like me then you probably love counting down to Christmas too.
Advent Calendar With Bags And Printable Numbers
I decided to start with muslin bags, first thinking that I would display them with mini clothespins over my chalkboard. Then I remembered my old black painted soda crate. It has 24 spaces, which is just the right number for an advent calendar.
Next up is adding numbers. Should I stencil them on the bag or add tags? Printing off a sheet of numbers to create the tags is a whole lot easier. Each red number has a green wreath for just a little bit of color.
You are welcome to download or print the sheet for your personal use only.

Once all the days are cut out, then a hole is added with a hole punch for the string. The tags are easy to attach to the bag strings with a simple knot.
Three of the spaces have a mini Santa mug instead of a muslin bag, which makes counting down those last few days extra special. I love the vintage touch the Santa mugs add to the advent calendar too.
Red and white string is handy for lots of holiday crafts. I keep several different colors to use all year.
Supplies For Advent Calendar

- hole punch
- treats for the bags
- soda crate
Advent Calendar Ideas
If you don’t want to use a crate, then create a garland of bags using mini clothespins and cotton string.
Another idea for a crate similar to mine is to fill each space with a small ornament, and let the kiddos add an ornament to the tree each day.

This is just adorable, Michelle! My kids LOVED counting down the days with an advent calendar when they were young and we had many variations over the years, but this is a fabulous one!
