I’m trying something new this year on my Christmas mantel with mercury glass and ticking stripes. I also have a new snowflake garland to show you, and my secret for hanging a wreath over artwork.
This is the first year in quite some time, that I am not decorating with fresh cut pine and cedar branches. We have family staying with us for most of December and I don’t want to send everyone with allergies into a tail spin. I’m sure next year we will be back in business with fresh greenery.
Christmas Mantel With Mercury Glass And Ticking
It’s always a fun challenge to decorate with what I already have in different ways. Are you like that too? If you’ve followed me for a while you might remember that I love ticking stripes in my everyday decor. This year I found a way to continue the ticking theme into the holidays.
Mercury glass trees are back on the mantel. I really look forward to using them year after year, sometimes on the entry table or dining table, but they look best in here. I’ve been know to leave them out past Christmas and use them as winter decor well into January.
Red ticking striped books are in the mix too. The secret is creating book jackets with ticking stripe wrapping paper. It’s so easy and it adds just the right amount of color.
I like using a wee bit of red with a whole lot of green and white for Christmas. The red ticking paper has a vintage feel that seems to agree with the mercury glass. Plus the ticking covered books are handy to use as risers.
To balance each side of the mantel, mercury glass ball garlands and votive candle holders finish out the theme. One more glass bead garland adorns the contemporary painting next to the tree. For more views see the post Tips On Decorating A Christmas Tree.
Snowflake Garland
Now for that delicate looking snowflake garland. I found some very inexpensive white glittery snowflake ornaments and tied each one to a long piece of cotton string. Each end of the garland has a loop that slips over Command mini clear hooks under the mantel. So simple!
Hang A Wreath Over Artwork
Over the fireplace a faux pine wreath hangs from a small clear hook attached to the glass. I wouldn’t recommend this unless you have a wreath that’s really light weight. Another option would be to affix a hook to the back of the painting upside down or on the wall and hang the wreath with ribbon.
A little plaid ribbon on the wreath carries over the plaid theme from the Christmas Tree. I love the rich dark green and black colors of the plaid and how it blends in with the faux pine.
Last years post, Simple Ideas For Christmas Mantels, has lots more ideas on decorating with the fresh greenery, pepper berries and mercury glass.

So how do you like the vintage feel of the ticking mixed with the mercury glass? I’m thinking of continuing the look in another space, but more on that to come. Thanks so much for stopping by.
Cheers!
