For this months Pinterest Challenge, I’m sharing a few tips on how to create a cozy reading nook. If you are looking for a relaxing place to escape to read a book or magazine, then this months challenge is sure to inspire.
Pinterest Challenge
Just in case you’re new here…every month our amazing host Cindy of County Road 407, selects an inspiration photo for us to recreate. Each participant puts their own spin on the photo according to our individual style of decorating. The best part is seeing how everyone interprets the image, and we always have an interesting variety.
If you’re stopping by from visiting Kristin over at White Arrow’s Home, welcome and make yourself at home. Kristin’s delightful way of using plaid always makes me smile!
Our inspiration this month comes from Allie from Proverbs 31 Girl, of her lovely sitting area. If you click through the link you’ll find the decor in this room is casual with lots of light neutral colors and fabrics.
To start here’s my take-a-way of Allie’s photo, which is kind of like playing a game of I Spy.

- pillows
- chunky throw blanket
- natural light from a window
- floor lamp
- art work on wall
- ottoman
- tray

How To Create A Cozy Reading Nook
Reading nooks can be in almost any room of your home. It’s basically all about finding a good corner, or if you’re really lucky, a spot by a fireplace.
As with previous Pinterest challenges, I like shopping my home, so I’m happy to say creating a reading nook didn’t cost a dime.
Comfortable Chair
After recently repainting our bedroom and donating some out dated furniture, I found an empty corner needing attention. This months Pinterest challenge inspiration is exactly what I needed.
You may remember this chair from an older post, Armchair Slipcover and DIY Slipcovers and Why I Love Making Them. It’s a vintage chair from the 1940s and fondly handed down for three generations.
I remember hearing, “that chair has good bones”, and sure enough that’s why it’s a comfortable chair for reading. Adding a chunky throw blanket and down pillow will make it even more cozy.
Good Lighting
Three large windows flood the bedroom with beautiful natural light, but task lighting is also necessary. With shorter daylight hours starting soon, a floor lamp will provide good reading light.
This floor lamp is destine for a makeover. I love mixing contemporary and vintage styles, but I’m thinking the chrome finish is a little too harsh. What do you think about a brushed nickel or a bronze finish on the lamp to make this corner more cohesive?
Table Or Ottoman
Having a good spot to set down a drink or a cup of tea is my third requirement for this cozy nook. Substituting a ceramic garden stool for a table works fine in this little corner. A chair and ottoman combination with a tray will also work depending on the size of your space.
In a different room I might search for a larger table, but a garden stool is perfect for setting down a stack of books and a mug of tea.
Artwork next to the window completes the cozy reading nook. By hanging the art lower on the wall, it relates better to the seating area.

You created a lovely reading corner to enjoy, Michelle! I’m in awe of your sewing skills to make that beautiful slipcover. I think your reading lamp looks fine as is. Enjoy some cozy reading time in this pretty place!
Michelle Meyer says
Thank you Paula, every time I walk into the room this space is calling me over to sit.

Love your corner, such an inviting space. That chair really does look comfy and even better since it is a family heirloom handed down through three generations. You are so right, good light, a nice lamp, and table for a drink are all that you need for a great cozy reading nook. Love that garden stool too, it adds just the right amount of pattern to your corner. I use garden stools as end tables all over my house.
Michelle Meyer says
Thank you so much Marty, this little garden stool is my favorite. I moved it from the living room and now I need something in its place. Oh the opportunities of decorating. 😉

A corner of the bedroom is the perfect spot for a cozy reading nook, Michelle! I love that yours is right next to the big window; a view to the outside makes everything beautiful! I always love how you combine the new with the old; it keeps it all fresh! I’m jealous of your slipcover skills. I’ve done a couple, but always have more confidence when my daughter is helping me; her sewing skills have far surpassed mine! Always enjoy hopping with you!

Thank you Lora! I really love having a chair in this corner. Our bedroom is on the second floor, so I have a great view of everything going on in backyard through these windows.

A perfect reading area, Michelle! I do love your Japanese style side table. It reminds me so much of all the pretty oriental pieces I’d see as a girl whenever we went to downtown Honolulu shopping. LOVE your family chair!!! Glad you made the slip to show the arms. <3
Happy fall, and enjoy your sweet reading nook,
Hugs,
Barb 🙂
Michelle Meyer says
That’s funny you mentioned the arms. When I make slipcovers I think of them as dresses. Then I decide if I want to show a little leg, shoulder or arm. Happy fall Barb!

Not only did you make me want to curl up and read Pride and Prejudice for the umpteenth time, I was drooling over the slip covers. You are so talented! And to have a chair from your grandmother is so sweet. All I got from my wonderful grandma were sweet memories. Every one of your posts are so relaxing and beautifully decorated. You must have the most calming personality too. Could you come over to my house and rub elbows with me?! Thank you so much for joining in. I love your posts!!!
Michelle Meyer says
HaHa so funny you mentioned that, I just finished Pride and Prejudice for the umpteenth time (audio book). Thank you so much for hosting and organizing our PC. I have a blast playing along every month. And whenever we do get together…the drinks are on me!
