May Pinterest Challenge
It’s time for our May Pinterest challenge. I always get so excited about these posts, because there’s always something new to try or discover. This month our challenge is summer ottoman or coffee table styling. If this is your first time to join us for a Pinterest challenge, this is how it works. Our host Cindy of County Road 407, selects a photo for us to recreate, and each participant puts their own spin on the photo.
Today we have eight bloggers sharing a variety of summer styling tips. If you’re popping over from DIY Beautify, welcome to Thistle Key Lane. I’m loving Cindy’s modern cottage spin of this challenge!
Our inspiration photo this month is from Home Stories A to Z. Beth shares 6 tips in her post on how to create a stylish summer ottoman, which you will find here. Taking my clues from Beth, I’m using many of the same elements for my ottoman arrangement.
- wood tray
- interesting vase or glass container
- fresh clippings
- decorating books
- magnifying glass
- small container with a bead garland
- candle
Summer Fresh Ottoman Styling
It’s been a while since I’ve shared views of the living room, so this challenge comes at the perfect time for updating the ottoman. By the way, my personal objective for the PC is to pull things from around the house, without spending a dime. Are you ready to decorate for summer? Let’s get to it.
Wood Tray And Arrangement
I’m starting our ottoman refresh with a wooden tray as a level place to build on. This is a tray I’ve had for several years, and it’s large enough for everything I want to display. As for the fresh arrangement, I’m mixing grocery store flowers with a hand full of small oak branches. Flowers are small indulgence, and make such a huge difference to freshen up a space.
In our challenge photo, Beth is using a glass lantern to hold fresh clippings from her yard. After experimenting with difference containers, my favorite pick is a large glass jar. Then for a little more interests to the arrangement, I’m leaving the jar lid attached. What I like best about this unruly mix of leaves and flowers, is that it looks like a spur of the moment arrangement.
Adding smaller elements
For smaller elements such as the magnifying glass and a candle I’m using decorating books as a platform. A simple gingham ribbon adds an additional pop of color and a hint of femininity.
The last element is a cereal bowl holding a clay garland. Yes that right, just a plain ordinary cereal bowl straight out of the cupboard LOL! Nothing fancy here, but it works. For details on how to make your own air dry clay garland you can click on my post here.
To change up the look I can display sea shells in the bowl instead of the clay garland, or a vintage trinket of some sort instead of the magnifying glass. This is wonderful way personalize your space with mementoes and objects that have meaning to you.

More Summer Fresh Ideas…
Always so tasteful and fresh!!! I never tire of your displays (or your crafts). I am so stealing, okay borrowing your idea of the oak leaves with Grocery store flowers. They are stunning and casual all at once.
Thanks so much Diane! The oak branch broke off in a recent storm, and I just couldn’t let it go to waste. 😉
Michelle
I love the use of the ottoman for a coffee table. Very stylish.
Thank you so much Rachel! Ottomans are so simple to style!
Your style is always so bright and clean Michelle! That small detail of the gingham ribbon is the perfect touch, and I love your wood bead garland… it reminds me of marshmallows!
Thank you Cindy! Haha the beads do look like marshmallows! Hugs!

Michelle, I love the bouquet you have created!! We have oak leaves just like this dropping everyday; I never think to bring them inside except in the fall. Great idea! I love the beads you made and their color is really pretty with the greenery plus contrasted with the pillows on your soft and armchair. Lovely touches!! Love your magnifying glass, too…
Thank you for the shout-out, too. 🙂
Enjoy and happy PC day,
Hugs,
Barb 🙂
Thank you for the sweet comments Barb! Hugs!
Love your attention to detail, Michelle. The gingham ribbon on the magnifying glass is definitely the cherry on top! Beautiful:)
