What Is Pimm’s
Pimm’s is a gin based liqueur with notes of herbal botanicals and spicy flavors.
The Pimm’s Cup originally created by James Pimm, started as a tonic to sooth digestion. It was served along with other sprits in his oyster bar in London back in the early 19th century. Eventually Pimm’s became the liqueur we enjoy today, with a slew of cocktail recipe variations to satisfy your taste palate.
The Pimm’s Cup also known as Pimm’s Cup No. 1 refers to the size of the small tankard it was originally served in.
Pimm’s Cup continues to be a popular cocktail at summer social events in England. It’s also the the official drink at Wimbledon, which is just as stylish as enjoying a mint julep at the Kentucky Derby.
Pimm’s Cup Cocktail Recipe
- 2 oz. Pimm’s
- 4 oz. lemonade (sparkling lemonade or lemon lime soda)
- garnish with slices of strawberry, cucumber, lemon, orange or lime
- fresh sprig of mint
Fill a tall glass with ice, add Pimm’s and top with sparkling lemonade. Garnish with your favorite fruit slice combination and mint.
Recipe Notes
For this cocktail, I like using Fever Tree sparkling Sicilian lemonade for easy mixing. You can substitute the sparkling lemonade with fresh squeezed lemon and lime juice and top with club soda, which is really hard to beat.
When it comes to garnishes, I say follow your heart’s desires. Normally I use cucumber ribbons which is very aromatic, but in a pinch sometimes I just use what I have on hand. This time, I even picked some of the mint starting to sprout up in my container garden.
Recipe Variations
You know what I always say about recipes…make it like you like it. Feel free to substitute ginger ale or ginger beer for the traditional lemonade. I’m all for the spicy twist on the classic recipe, and it is just as refreshing.
Traditionally Pimm’s Cup is a tall drink intended for sipping. However to enjoy a more pronounced taste of Pimm’s use 2 to 3 ounces of lemonade instead of 4 to 5 ounces.
