Early Spring Botanical Mantel

I’m officially kicking off spring decorating with an early spring botanical mantel. It’s a simple way to welcome the new season with green plants and clippings from the garden.

Early Spring Botanical Mantel

We are experiencing unusually warm weather this week. The birds are up extra early every morning chatter like crazy. I think there’s some arguing going on too, like who’s building a nest and where.

I’m feeling like it’s time to be a part of all that spring activity, so I’m refreshing our home with seasonal changes. The mantel is usually the first place I start decorating for spring, and I’m ready to bring the outdoors in.

No more winter accents, candles and pinecones. Instead you’ll see an assortment of fresh plants, art, yard clippings and a handsome rabbit.

Foraging The Backyard

Our blueberry bushes are budding early due to all this warm weather. We had a late freeze last year, and unfortunately didn’t have a very good crop.

I’m afraid the same may happen this year as well. So before winter weather moves in again, I’m adding a few branches in a vase on the mantel. Don’t you just love the delicate look of these little budding branches?

Standing sentinel next to the clippings is a very handsome rabbit or hare. Last year he looked a bit more girlish with a wood bead necklace.

Fresh Botanicals And Artwork

I just can’t resist pretty plants when I see them, so I’m adding a few more to my collection. To give this medium size fern a little more height I have it sitting on a platform of books.

It’s no doubt I overuse books when decorating, but I just can’t seem to help it. Sometimes it’s to add height to an object, sometimes to cozy up a vignette or for displaying a collection of items. Call me crazy…I just love books!

By the way, do you like the look of the rustic terracotta flower pot or should I go with something lighter? You know I always appreciate your comments.

The tiny shamrock with pretty white blooms was an impulse buy at our local nursery. I was heading to check out with an arm full of ferns, when I spotted shamrocks covering half a table. Of course I wanted to bring all of them home, but thankfully came to my senses.

Thistles are another botanical I have a weakness for. My color inspiration of blues and greens for this whimsical thistle comes from the large landscape painting with its variety of shades.

I just started experimenting this week with a set of new paints and the colors are amazingly rich and intense. I can’t wait to try out more colors to see what I can create, even though I’m kind of stuck on the blues and greens right now.

Step Back And Take A Look

Random question. Do you ever step back and take a look at your seasonal decorating? I do it constantly, and love to try out different looks by adding or taking away items.

The photo below is missing the clay flower garland and the shamrock. I’m thinking there’s too much going on. Any thoughts?
