August Pinterest Challenge
It’s time for our August Pinterest challenge. This month we are creating summer to fall mantels or shelves. If this is your first time to join us for a Pinterest challenge, this is how it works. Our host Cindy of County Road 407, selects an image for us to recreate, and each participant puts their own spin on the photo.
Today we have 13 bloggers sharing a variety of seasonal decorating ideas. If you’re popping in from DIY Beautify welcome to Thistle Key Lane. My friend Cindy has some beautiful styling ideas for her brown transferware dishes. Don’t you love it?

Early Fall Plate Rack Styling
For my spin on this month’s Pinterest challenge, I’m turning my attention to the plate rack in the kitchen. Having limited counter space in the kitchen, is a major reason why I love having a plate rack to decorate as the seasons roll around. It also gives vertical interest to this side of the kitchen, without taking up much space.
Displaying Everyday Items
I gotta say, thank goodness for French blue and white transferware and ironstone, because they never go out of style. These dishes are what I consider my everyday decor, and both easily become part of my seasonal decor too. Other everyday items include bread boards, ironstone pitchers, and copper pieces.
My little collection of copper is due for thorough cleaning and polishing, which I hope to fit in before we do any fall entertaining. For now though, we will pretend the tarnished copper patina adds to the charm of the fall display. 😉
Fall Accents For the Plate Rack
Fall accents include a tiny felt pumpkin, a café au lait bowl holding pinecones, a mini oil painting and a paper bag leaf wreath. Because the wreath is small and light weight, I just tied it to the brass plate rail with string. To see how to make a rustic wreath like this, just click on my post here.
Changing things up a little from the inspo photo, I created an impromptu topiary by placing a felt pumpkin on top an ironstone pot. How easy it that? Vintage books tied with brown gingham ribbon makes a fun textured feature, while additional books serve as a platform for a bowl of pinecones and flower frog.
Instead of dried hydrangeas, I have a mini bouquet of flowers in soft colors sitting on the kitchen chair. You know me, I’m always looking for any excuse to buy flowers.

Thank you Missy! I think I’m ready to add a few more fall accents. 😊
I love the small details! The frame, the little acorns on the wreath, the gingham ribbon – it’s all perfect! I’ve always wanted a plate rack. I’m going to start harping on the Mister to make me one. He’ll love it! Thanks. LOL. pinned
Great idea Cindy, maybe he will make one for the farmhouse too! 😉 Thank you for another successful PC and for hosting! Hugs!
Michelle, you do the most amazing job, of making your shelves appear full & interesting, but clean, simple and balanced. That is an art!!! And you have mastered it. I want to take your class.
Haha you give me more credit than I deserve, but I’m so happy you like it Diane! Hugs!

Yay thank you Lora! I’m not really in any big rush to polish copper right now. Maybe no will notice LOL!
MIchelle, I apologize for not writing yesterday. It was a bit crazy when my WP and Pinterest weren’t working. I do love how you’ve arranged your hanging shelf. It’s pretty with the soft greens of the flower frog and flowers on the chair. I love the large wooden masher and other old kitchen tools and the lace-tied books! I also love the little fall painting/print on the lower shelf. <3 Beautiful!!!
Enjoy this little bit of fall as you work your way into the season, and Happy Labor Day,
Barb 🙂
