Coastal Family Room Styling
After a day of chores and running errands in the summer heat, we look forward to kicking off our shoes and relaxing. That’s why I love decorating with coastal accents around the home that remind me of trips to the beach and more vacations to come. Mostly it’s the laid back vibe, that the coastal look encourages.
Coastal Colors and wicker
Around the room are accents of soft muted shades of blues and creams, that feel both cool and tranquil. These colors are repeated in art work, books, pillow covers, and ceramics.
On the mantel I have books casually leaning on a glass hurricane candle holder next to a vintage piece of coral. On the other side is a new piece of art from yours truly (haha), and a sea biscuit. The light blue vase is a recent makeover, and looks so much better than the previous charcoal finish.
The side table next to the fireplace is another space I enjoy updating for summer. Do you remember my DIY map sailboat from last year? This is one of my Handcrafted Society challenge projects. For the complete tutorial you click my post here.
Wicker is one of my favorite go to accents with a wonderful coastal feel adding character and texture to any space. The oversized wicker tray on the low coffee table is a fun accessory to decorate for any season. For summer, I using one of my vintage seltzer bottles which good for height, and for something green I have a little fern resting on a stack of blue and white dishes. The vintage shoe molds sitting on a stack of books, have a beautiful old patina that I just love.
Vintage Collections
Our rattan bar cart is loaded with vintage goodies. In my opinion the wicker wine bottles fit right in with coastal decor just as much as the copper bowl of oyster shells. I’m also using an old gym basket to hold shells, starfish and a vintage jar of pink peonies. You can click on my post here to see how to style a wire basket in the kitchen.
The old metal container on the bottom shelf holding a variety of whisky bottles is a vintage zinc drawer. It’s one of my first pieces purchases from many years ago.
