Winter Decorating With Cottage Styling
As I’m writing this post I’m glancing out the window at snow on the ground. Yep winter is finally here! There’s no time like the present to clean, organize and add a few seasonal touches to take pleasure in until spring arrives.
When I dream of cottage styling, I imagine cozy spaces that allow me to soak in the warmth they offer. During the winter months we sit a bit closer to the fireplace and linger longer to visit or read. I also like to focus on the natural seasonal accents that we enjoy seeing this time of year.
Vintage pieces make an appearance on table tops too, which adds a layer of cozy nostalgia. Nothing too precious, but at the same time things that we treasure for their beauty or craftsmanship.
Winter Bar Cart
Even in winter I love fresh flowers. This bouquet of white and lavender colored flowers caught my eye at the grocery store, and I’m loving the energy they add to the room.
I removed the ribbon on the vintage seltzer bottles and added some green rope. A little bowl of champagne corks remind me of celebrations over the holidays. 😉
Pillow Covers
I find that pillow covers are the easiest approach to making seasonal changes in our family room. This year I’m gathering pillows in blues and browns shades that don’t necessarily match, but are interesting to mix together. I have a couple of plaid pillows, a stripe, a floral and two solids.
I find that these colors are very soothing and blend in the the furniture in our family room. The mix of patterns have that cottage feel that just feels like home to me.
Winter Decorating With Faux Greenery
On the fireplace mantel I’m using the same arrangement we had on the bar cart during the holidays, which you can see here. It is a mix of faux cedar, and three faux pine varieties including Norfolk pine. For contrast in color and texture I have one dried magnolia stem. To see a similar arrangement on the entry table click on my post here.
Candles
Glass hurricane candle holders are a new addition to the mantel. For a fun spin, I’m using a glass tapper holder in each one. I’m kinda lovin’ this groovy look. We use candles all year, but I especially enjoy them in winter evenings.
Natural Elements For Winter Decorating
Don’t you just love real foliage in the winter? Fresh magnolia branches are one of my favorites. I don’t cut on our tree very often, that is maybe once a year. Luckily these clippings will last for at least a month. Did you notice the little brass quail? I’m not sure if it is really vintage or not, but it does add some character to this winter vignette. What do you think?
Pine cones are a must for fall through winter in our decor. In my after Christmas cleaning frenzy, I packed up most of the pine cones, but saved a few to add to a round leaf tray.
I hope to do some more window gazing of the snow today before it is all gone. By the way our new puppy Moose loves the snow, of course. He likes to race outside and back in for treats. Not sure if I’m training him or if he is training me LOL!

I do miss having magnolia leaves in my yard. Candles, plaids, and lap blankets with greenery can’t be for warming up our homes And of course fires if you can.
