February Pinterest Challenge
It’s time for our February Pinterest challenge. Yay! This month we are working on early spring mantels and shelves. If this is your first time to join us for a Pinterest challenge, this is how it works. Our host Cindy of County Road 407, selects a photo for us to recreate, and each participant puts their own spin on the photo. Today we have eleven bloggers sharing a variety of styles that you are going to love.
If you’re popping over from The Ponds Farmhouse, welcome to Thistle Key Lane. My friend Rachel always has the best budget friendly ideas and her mantel is so pretty!
Our inspirational photo this month comes from Sharon @HouseonHeatherfield via instagram. This photo caught Cindy’s eye on Pinterest, and I’m so glad it did. There are so many cute ideas on Sharon’s mantel and hearth that I want to recreate. Here’s what I’m gathering for a similar spring look and feel.
- fresh flowers
- potted plants
- little flower pots
- rabbit figurine
- woven round tray
- textured vase
- green books
Vintage Spring Mantel Decor Styling
Our weather is warming up to spring like temps again. Yippee! After being super cold last week, I’m more than ready for a change. Speaking of change, I think it is officially time to update the mantel for the spring season. I’m starting by gathering items from around the house.
I’m using vintage items to decorate the mantel to add a bit of charm and character. The terracotta flower pots, a wicker tray, green books, a wine bottle and a wooden chair will blend right in with the newer everyday pieces.
Asymmetrical Balance of Weight, Texture and Color
When I’m inspired by a photo I like to focus on mixing in elements that I may not have thought of before, such as the vintage French wicker tray. I’m temporarily borrowing it from the guest room, and love the unexpected interest the shape creates. Nestle in a textured wrapped vase of fresh flowers, a couple ferns, plus vintage pots and I have a very pleasing arrangement.
For an asymmetrical balance of weight, texture and color I’m pulling in a wicker wine bottle to correspond with the wicker tray for color. For height I’m using a glass hurricane on top of one of the books. The green books also create balance to tie in with the green planter on the other side of the mantel.
In addition, I’m repeating the use of terra cotta with a bunny to stand in as a tiny bookend. By the way, the original finish of the bunny is gray, however applying textured terra cotta paint gives it a completely different look.
Wooden Chair On The Hearth
Instead of a crate to hold a plant on the hearth, I’m using a wooden chair. A few more vintage pots are sitting in a green drawer, which is a fun addition since this is a Pinterest challenge after all. Our new puppy Moose discovered the pots pretty quick, so I removed them. At least they were they long enough for the photo shoot LOL!

Such a sweet mantel. I’ve wanted to find some Demijohn bottles, and the texture is perfect for this Spring Mantel. I love green vintage books and your sweet bunny.
Thank you Rachel! The wicker wrapped demijohn is a new find but I’m still on the hunt for more. 😉

Thank you Laura! The bunny is one of my favorite makeovers and so easy too!
Beautiful, Michelle! I am jealous of your vintage books with the perfect spring color covers. And your little bunny holding up the books…precious! I love your interpretation!
Thanks so much Missy! Lucky I found the Field Guide to Wild Flowers just before we received the challenge photo! 😉
You have such a way with combining accessories and making it feel so fresh and simple — like it was totally effortless. Even though I know it wasn’t. Simply perfect!!!
Thank you so much Diane for the sweet comment! To tell you the truth decorating is always a bit of trial and error for me!
Great job with the asymmetrical mantel! It’s very pretty and I love each piece you used. Even the hearth is done perfectly!
Thank you Cindy! You really picked a fun challenge for us with so much to work with! Everyone did a fabulous job of decorating!
I love the fresh Spring feel of your mantle Michelle, the perfect blend of new and old! That little green flower pot is the perfect color, and i love the little drawer on the chair! Ooh, I didn’t know you have a new puppy… with a name like Moose I’m guessing he’s going to be big? LOL
Thank you Cindy! Yes we have a doodle mix and he’s getting bigger everyday LOL!
Michelle, I love the soft interpretation you’ve created up on your mantel and hearth. The painting sure adds its beautiful colors among the baskets and greenery. Beautiful! Glad your hearth plants made it through the shoot! It’s tough with new puppies. 😉
Great interpretation of the inspiration mantel, Michelle. The greenery on the mantel and the woven basket tray are lovely. The profusion of flowers in the tall vase is a great focal point.
Thank you Carol! Fresh flowers are always a favorite of mine!
So pretty, Michelle! I always love those wicker wine bottles and have never seen one in the wild. They add so much shape and texture to a vignette. Great idea to place your low down things on a chair, too; great foundation. Congrats on a new puppy!
Thank you Lora! I love your comment about the wicker wine bottle. I’ve been looking for them for a while, and finally spotted one in my local antique mall. Lucky find! 😉
Michelle,
Your mantel looks lovely. Congratulations, you are being featured on TFT. I hope you stop by.
Hugs,
Bev
