How To Decorate With Poinsettias In Crates

Today I’m sharing how to decorate with poinsettias in crates. Every year I can’t wait to picking out poinsettias, in fact I look forward to it almost as much as decorating our tree. It must be all those fond childhood memories of my mom and grandma making such a big fuss over them.

Pinterest Challenge

The idea of decorating with crates was inspired by this months Pinterest challenge. If you’re new here…every month our wonderful host Cindy of County Road 407, selects an inspiration photo for us to recreate. Each participant puts their own spin on the photo according to our individual style of decorating.

The best part is seeing how everyone interprets the image, and we always have an interesting variety. We’re still enjoying last months Pinterest challenge project on our kitchen table, to see the details click on Snow Village Houses In A Jar.

Our inspiration for this month challenge comes from Jennifer at The Grace House Interiors. Her Magnolia crate holding pretty carved wooden trees and greenery is rustic, yet so elegant sitting on her entry table. I want to create a crate arrangement that is rustic yet elegant too.

The crates I found are definitely in the rustic category. I didn’t exactly dumpster dive, but I did find these on a trash pile. The previous owners dog lovingly chewed the corners a bit, but I decided I can work around that.
Rustic Crates For Displaying Poinsettias.
My first plan was to use my Norfolk pine in a crate, but the terra-cotta pot was too large. Then I realized I could use the crates for poinsettias which is something I haven’t tried before, and as you can guess, I ran with the idea.

There’s really nothing to arranging poinsettias in crates. Depending on how deep the crate is you may need to add something in the bottom to elevate the plants. My secret is using cereal boxes.

A plastic bag goes on top of the cereal box to catch moisture from the plant. Then a simple piece of linen fabric hides the box and plastic bag from showing through the slats. Burlap fabric with its interesting texture is also a good choice.

On the front of the crate is a simple preserved boxwood wreath tied with jute string. I love the bright green color and shape of boxwood leaves which compliment the poinsettia leaves. All that’s left is adding the poinsettias and a simple ribbon.

The second crate has two large pine picks instead of fabric on the inside. They hide the box and plastic bag the poinsettias are sitting in, and they look pretty peeking out the top and sides.
What do you think about the beaded mercury glass garland? I think it adds an elegant touch to this old crate and looks so pretty with the pink variegated poinsettias leaves.
