Fall Tablescape

See how easy it is to create a fall tablescape without going all orange, yellow and brown. I love all the shades of fall, although some accents I like best in small doses.

In the post fall color in the kitchen I shared a fabulous potted sunflower. Incredible how that little pop of yellow and green automatically made the whole room smile. Now I’m using the same approach with my fall tablescape with little hints of color.

For this tablescape the inspiration started with a vintage square tablecloth with embroidered flowers and vines in shades of purple, red, orange, yellow and green.

Mixing vintage and modern elements is an ongoing theme with most of my decorating. Sometimes all it takes is one vintage piece to pull everything together.

To make a table runner, I folded the tablecloth in thirds, leaving the hand crocheted lace trim visible.

Let’s say you don’t have a table runner but you like the look. Here are a few suggestions you can substitute to create your own stylish table.

The centerpiece is a mix of textures starting with a fern in a terra-cotta pot, a sunflower in a glass vase, a twig pumpkin, a few candles and a plaid tray holding shells for salt and pepper. Gotta have some plaid in my fall decor!

Remember unscented candles are best when serving food.

Some of my best centerpieces have been objects collected from around the house with the same color schemes.

The place settings are simple white dishes, rust trimmed napkins and clear wine glasses. One of my favorite ways to set the table is by placing a cloth napkin under the salad plate or bowl. Such a simple way to make your guests feel special.

So why do I like mixing vintage and modern? Because vintage and modern compliment each other. One element is hand-made with dozens of little imperfections and has survived years of loving use. The other elements have clean perfect lines with flawless finishes. You can’t argue that opposites attract.
