Welcome to Thistle Key Lane and my first official fall post of the season featuring a fall home tour with neutral colors. Today I’m sharing one the easiest ways I’ve found to decorate for fall which is using neutral accents. This is my way of transitioning into a new season. Of course when pumpkin season arrives, and mums start blooming, I can mix in pops of color. It’s like setting the stage for autumn to arrive.
Celebrating Fall Home Tour Blog Hop
I’m so happy to be joining the Celebrating Fall Home Tour Blog Hop, hosted by my friend Leen of Sand Dollar Lane. We have 15 bloggers sharing tons of fall decorating ideas so get ready to pin lots of ideas to you fall season boards. You’ll find all the links of participants at the end of this post.
If you’re stopping by from 2 Bees In A Pod, I’m so glad you’re here. Vicki and Jenn have the most amazing style and I love those early fall refresh ideas.
Fall Home Tour With Neutral Colors
As we get closer to fall type weather I enjoy decorating with warm earthy tones in a variety of textures around the house. Here are some of the items I’m concentrating on with neutral colors.
- wooden bowls
- grain sack pillow covers
- throw blankets
- metal containers or trays
- terra cotta pots
- ironstone dishes
- old books
- wood acorns
- gourds
The fall tour starts in the entryway. On the entry table I have a very simple grouping or arrangement in a zinc drawer. It’s kind of like using a wooden crate or tray.
I love creating little vignettes like this that can be moved to a counter or coffee table if I need to make a quick change.
Inside I have an odd mix of items including a cloche with raffia pumpkins. For a complete tutorial click on my post Fall Cloche With Raffia Pumpkins.
For a pop of green I have a faux topiary and some chippy terra cotta pots holding wood acorns. A few old books add a bit of seasonal color and the owl cut out in the back is just for fun. Click on How To Create A Faux Topiary to make one for yourself.
As soon as I see pumpkins for sale you can bet I’ll wedge a few baby boos into the arrangement. The yellow and white stripe tiger pumpkins are pretty cute too.
Neutral Colors In The Family Room
Our family room is bright and casual with views of the back yard and pool area. I usually keep decorating to a minimum in here to maintain the easy going relaxed style.
So I might be a little obsessed with spinner and mini bottle shaped gourds. This year I’m displaying them in a large vintage dough bowl on the coffee table along with a few decorating books and green plants.
The look is simple yet eye-catching because the gourds have so many interesting shapes. I can’t help picking them up, because they make a sound like a baby rattle when you shake them.
On one stack of books I have a vintage looking whisk broom. It has that great texture and color we love to see in fall decor. More neutral accents such as pillows and throw blankets give the family room a casual comfy feel. The grain sack pillow covers take a lot of abuse but never seem to wear out.
I’m only giving a tiny sneak peek at my fall mantel. The rest will be in a post tomorrow morning for this months Pinterest challenge so be sure to check back then.
Simple Flowers And Apples
Adding a little splash of color to the kitchen table is a simple bachelor button and chamomile arrangement with maple leaf branches. I usually take advantage of what we have growing in our yard and forage every time I create a flower arrangement. Sometimes it’s a branch or two and sometimes it’s herbs from the patio container garden.
I’m still waiting on my zinnias to get full size. They seem to be struggling this year with all the rain and cloudy weather we had at the beginning of the summer. More on zinnias to come.
One thing I love about the approach of fall season is all the beautiful apples. These Honey Crisp apples are as big as grapefruits. It’s so easy to load up a bowl with pretty apples to keep out on the table and promote healthier snacking.

I love your fall home! It looks so pretty. All those subtle touches and natural elements look wonderful. You did a great job getting your home ready for fall.
Michelle Meyer says
Thank you so much Marianne! It won’t be long and I’ll be filling in the spaces with baby boo pumpkins too!
Cindy Richter says
I’m obsessed with your little gourds too! Where do you find them? I still remember a few of them lined up on your mantel one season and I was hooked. Everything looks beautiful and I really love how it seems light and airy. Sometimes (well at least at my house) decor can and get heavy looking even when I try to scale back.
Michelle Meyer says
I found these little gourds on-line and added a link towards the end of the post. Thanks so much for stopping by and the sweet comments!
Cindy Richter says
Yay. I’ll check out the link! Thanks

Michelle your fall home is so pretty. I love those gourds, sadly, in NJ they are hard to come by. Look beautiful in your dough bowl and quite the collection.
Michelle Meyer says
Thank you Cindy! The gourds are really fun and the easiest arrangement to create.

What great ideas! I love the pops of navy in your home and how the fall decor stands out against that gorgeous color. And I am obsessed, too, with those bottle shaped gourds! They look so pretty in the dough bowl. Always inspiring, my friend!

Thank you Jen! The navy wall starts in the entry and wraps around to the kitchen bar. It was a bold decision to paint it but we are still loving it after four years.
Patti says
Michelle, great use of vintage mixed in with the fresh green of living plants. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such cute little gourds. I’m going to keep my eye out for some now. Thanks
Michelle Meyer says
Thank you Patti! I just have to have some green in every room. This side of the house has the best light and the plants do so well in here.

Thank you Julie! I added a link for the gourds to the post and there are lots to choose from on-line.

Vicki and Jenn 2 Bees in a Pod says
Michelle, your home is gorgeous – especially with your fall touches. We too love vintage dough bowls. The miniature gourds are a perfect addition! Can’t wait to read your post on how to make faux topiary!
Michelle Meyer says
Thank you so much Vicki and Jenn! I’ll have to remember to tell my husband to collect those old wasp nests like you have. They would be pretty under a cloche.
Dara - The Roots of Home says
Lovely! I really like your mini gourd ideas. I’ll have to be on the lookout for those!
Michelle Meyer says
Thank you Dara! This year I hope to add a few more, maybe the larger variety. 😊
Rebecca says
Michelle, I’ve never seen mini gourds before…they’re so unique and are the perfect neutral decor for your dough bowl! I love the wooden acorns, too. Going neutral is a great way to transition from summer to fall decor. I’ve never seen raffia pumpkins, either. I’ll be going over to check out your tutorial. They look great under the cloche! It was a pleasure to visit your lovely home and to join you on the tour. Pinned!
Michelle Meyer says
