October Handcrafted Society Challenge
It’s time for another Handcrafted Society challenge with unique projects to spark your imagination. If you are new to my blog, the Handcrafted Society is simply, a group of bloggers who share a love for detail and craftsmanship. Each month we take our assigned medium, and set our creative skills to work.
This month we are working with books. Sounds pretty smart to me! 😉 Be sure to check out the links and photos at the end of my post to see what my friends are sharing too. You can also check out another October HS project by clicking on my post, DIY Embroidery Hoop Pumpkins.
Fall Dried Floral Book Vignette
If your fall season as been as hectic as mine, then you are going to appreciate how quick and simple this vignette is to create. For the base we have a little stack of books, with a mini dried floral bouquet topper. How easy is that?!
Almost every shelf and tabletop in my home features books of some sort, because they are part of our everyday decor. Some books on display are for reference, inspiration and relaxation. Others are from an old set of children’s classics, that now have painted book covers. These are the ones that I use more for decoration and in vignettes such as this one.
Book Vignette Supplies
- hardback books
- paper for book jackets (optional)
- dried floral stems (leaves, grasses, pods, and flowers)
- feathers (optional)
- string
- ribbon
- scissors
Dried Floral Bouquet
For the decorative topper of this vignette, I’m using a variety of dried florals to create a small bouquet. To create a bouquet, layer preserved leaves, dried grasses, pods and flowers into a small bundle. I’m using shades of orange, amber, yellow and cream, however you can use any fall colors that go best in your home. Just for fun, I’m also inserting a few feathers, for additional color and texture behind the fall leaves.

Book Jackets
For this vignette you’ll need at least three hardback books in various sizes. They can be cookbooks, novels or whatever you might have on hand. If the book covers are not the right colors for a fall vignette, then you can create a book jacket or dust jacket in any color you desire.
The books I’m using do not have the fall color palette that I’m looking for, so I’m improvising with some plaid and gingham wrapping paper. If you want a monochromatic look, you can also use white or brown craft paper, wallpaper or paper sacks.
The book jackets are one long piece of paper that folds over the front and back book flap. The paper is not glued or taped in place, because these book jackets are temporary.
Assembling The Dried Floral Book Vignette
To assemble your dried floral book vignette you can use string or ribbon. I’m using jute ribbon, because I love the rustic texture and contrast of color with the green plaid and gingham book jackets. First wrap your ribbon around the stack of books and secure on top with a knot. Then you can use another piece of ribbon to hold the dried floral bouquet in place on top of the stack, with a knot or bow.
Displaying Your Fall Book Vignette
I’m loving the punch of fall color, patterns and textures in this sweet book vignette. How about you? If you’re looking for display ideas check out these suggestions.
- on a book shelf with other books
- use a wood riser or plate pedestal
- entry table next to a lamp
- make it part of a larger arrangement with pumpkins and gourds
- in a basket
- on your kitchen table or island

Such a fun idea, Michelle! The colors in your paper are perfect for fall and coordinate so nicely with the dried bouquet! I can imagine how great this would work for other seasons/holidays as well! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks Donna! I’ll have to give this a try for Christmas, with different paper and pretty greenery!
Michelle – I am struck by the pretty combination of colors you used for this project! I love the coordinating papers used on the books and the fall colors you integrated with the dried florals. The simplicity and practicality of this project is so appealing. It makes a statement but doesn’t require a lot of time or money to create. (my favorite types of projects). Always fun participating in HCS with you! Pinned!
Thank you so much Anna! I’m happy to be in Handcrafted Society with you too! There’s always something new to explore!
