Egg Carton Animal Portraits
With projects like this, I can just have fun without worrying to much about the outcome. All I’m doing is turning an egg carton, a minimal amount of craft supplies, and a wee bit of imagination into silly animal portraits. Want to play along? Yay, I knew you would!
I’ve seriously been wanting to make egg carton animals for several years. They occasionally come up when I’m scrolling through Pinterest, and I say to myself every time, I want to make those. Here’s a list of supplies I’m using to help you get started.
- paper egg carton
- scissors and exact knife
- stick glue, white school glue, hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
- pencil, pens, markers or paints of your choice
- craft paper, scrapbook paper or wrapping paper
- string or ribbon
Animal Heads and Faces
First, you will want to cut the center sections out of your egg carton, but keep the rest of the egg carton to make additional types of animal shapes.
Trim away any rough edges on your cone shapes, then reshape the tip so you can make a nose. You can do this by slightly folding in the tip and add a dot of white school glue. To make a duck’s bill, flatten the tip of the cone and use a dot of glue to keep it closed. Use the egg carton scraps to make ears and any accessories you might come up with.
I made the mouse, rabbit, duck and fox out of the cone shapes. The beaver and the bear are from the bottom sections, where the round embossed center becomes the nose.
Next, paint your animal heads. For some, I’m using markers and others I’m using acrylic paint. I have to confess, I’m pretty much making this up as I go. As far as I’m concerned, there are no set rules in making your animal heads. 😉
Use markers, pens or paint to create the face details such as eyes, eyelashes, whiskers, nose and mouth outlines.
Portrait Clothes and Frames
I’m using white craft paper as well as the carton top to create patterns for the frames, backgrounds and portrait clothes. That way I can trace and cut out my shapes on scrapbook or colored craft paper. If you are really good at drawing with markers, you might want to skip the scrapbook paper to make your own designs….me not so much.
My favorite portrait top is the pink shirt with ruffles and carrot buttons, which is perfect for the girl rabbit. Do you have a favorite?
When making your frames and backgrounds, use whatever color and pattern combinations that make you happy. I love checks and plaids, can you tell? If you are drawing patterns yourself, make doodles such as polka dots, hearts, flowers, or stripes. Anything goes when you are being creative.
Egg Carton Animal Portrait Assembly and Variations
To assemble the frames, backgrounds and portrait tops, I’m using stick glue to layer them together. However to attach the animal heads and ears, I’m using a hot glue gun. I’m still deciding on how to display my animal portraits, however I will probably use hot glue to attach a loop of string or ribbon on the back.
For variations, think about using fabric scraps, lace or buttons for the portrait clothes. You can also use ribbon and fabric to make hats. I definitely want to design some fancy hats, when I make more animal portraits.
