Today I’m sharing an easy DIY map leaf garland and fall printables. I love decorating with garlands no mater what season we’re celebrating, so why not a leaf garland for fall. Normally the mantel is my first pick for a garland but this time the chalkboard won out. A chalkboard is sort of a blank canvas and more than ready for seasonal decorations.
DIY Map Leaf Garland And Fall Printables
Why use a map? Maps are full of fun colors, shapes, markings and text. I’m using a world map where the colors splotches depict continents and countries. Of course you can use any kind of old map you have such as state road maps.
Some leaves may have more colors than others which is alright because a soft look is what I’m going for.
DIY Map Leaf Garland Supplies
- map
- scissors
- pen or pencil
- small nail
- waxed cotton string
Trace a leaf image on the back of the map and cut out.
This is a fun project for kids if you want some help cutting out the leaves.
Use a small nail about the same size as the string to poke holes through the paper leaves.
For string, I’m using a waxed cotton, because it is easier to thread through the holes. Instead of using one long piece of string though, I’m using three short ones to tie together. This makes threading the leaves on the string go a bit faster.
Free Fall Printables
I decided to go all out, and create a couple of watercolors to tape on the chalkboard, instead of writing a fall quote. Then I let the family vote on them, which ended up in a tie. So I’m happy to say, you can pick one or both if you like.
The first is a fun “Hello Pumpkin” with a simple row of orange, green, and yellow pumpkins. These are happy little pumpkins with unique shapes and soft colors.

“Hello Fall” is the second printable, which I have to admit is my favorite. I love painting leaves with all the beautiful fall colors. Who knows if we will have a pretty display of colors this year, but that will depend on our crazy weather.

Oh this is so fun Michelle! The map is a great idea – I love the pattern and with the leaf shape, I got visions of fall road trips in the NE! Punching the holes for the string is a wonderful idea too! Thanks for all the great inspiration, once again!
