November Pinterest Challenge
It’s time for our November Pinterest challenge. This month we are either adding decorations to stockings or decorating with stockings, take your pick. If this is your first time to join us for a Pinterest challenge, this is how it works. Our host Cindy of County Road 407, selects an image for us to recreate, and each participant puts their own spin on the photo. To see last November’s PC click on my post here for gingerbread inspired wrapping ideas.
If you’re popping in from South House Designs, welcome to Thistle Key Lane. My friend Diane is pretty much an expert on Christmas stockings, so I know I’m going to love what she is sharing this month.
Our Pinterest challenge inspiration photo is from Home By Heidi. She has a gorgeous display of stockings across her holiday mantel which is our starting point for this month’s spin on the PC. We can share how we decorate with stockings, update old stockings or how to hang stockings.
How To Decorate With Homemade Stockings
Just a few months ago I shared this same wall plate rack for a fall Pinterest challenge, which you can view here. Now I’m back with a Christmas theme plate rack, and I hope you will love it as much as I do. Many of the decorative accents are the same, except now the plate rack is dressed up for the holidays.
For holiday decor, I was looking for something different for the plate rack other than a wreath or garland, so thanks to our PC I have a new plan. I’ve been really crunched for time this fall, and needed a quick and easy stocking project.
Would you believe that these stockings only take about 30 minutes to create, and they are made from a linen dishtowel? Yep that’s right, and I have a quick tutorial to show you how to make stockings too.
For this project you will want to gather the following supplies.
- dishtowel
- scrap paper or paper sack
- pencil
- scissors
- hot glue gun and glue sticks
- string
- pinking shears
Homemade Stockings From A Dishtowel
Why a dishtowel? Well first of all, I only need a small amount of fabric. Second the dishtowel has a hem, which will save me time. And third it has a hole in it, so I don’t feel guilty about cutting it up. 😉
Keep in mind these little stockings are just big enough to hold a few stems of greenery, and are very rustic. They measure about 4.5″ x 9″, however you can make yours whatever size you want.
Instructions
- First step, draw a stocking shape on a piece of paper to use as a pattern, allowing a little extra for a seam around the edge. Then cut out the pattern, and place it on the dishtowel, so that the top of the stocking pattern is on the edge where the hem is. Cut out one stocking then flip the pattern over and cut out another stocking. Repeat the process on the other end of the dishtowel when making two stockings. See photo 1.
- Second step, match your stocking pieces together, so that the good sides are facing out with the nice hem at the top. See photo 2.
- Step three, attach the two pieces together using hot glue or you can hand sew them together. Be sure to leave the top open. You can also attach a short string loop at the top of the stocking with hot glue, to use as a hanger. See photo 3.
- Last step, trim around the two sides and bottom of the stocking with pinking shears or you can just leave the edge to fray. See photo 4.
Holiday Plate Rack With Handmade Stockings
I’m really smitten with these little stockings, and how sweet they look on the wall plate rack. Maybe it’s their primitive design or maybe it’s the linen fabric that I’m loving. Either way I enjoy having something new and different for this plate rack.
To attach the stockings to the plate rail I’m using long thin green velvet ribbon with a simple bow. The last step is adding a few tiny stems of greenery. Don’t you think these would be cute with candy canes too? I may have to do that for the grand littles.
I’m also sharing some extra photos of the plate rack so you can see the whole wall. Don’t you just love these little English ceramic cottages? Again I’m completely smitten with these simple collections, and the greenery that brings it all to life.

More Stocking Inspiration Just For You

Your handmade stockings are just adorable Michele! I love the pinking edges and the green velvet ribbon that is so YOU!
Michelle, I love your simple stockings. Such a great idea to use a dish towel. The possibilities are endless. Your plate rack is awesome – makes me want one, too. Thanks for the inspiration.
Michelle
Such cute stockings. Great post.
Oh Michelle, your sweet simple linen stockings are perfection hanging on your plate rack. I need to do the same! Thanks for inspiring me!!!
Thank you so much Diane! You will always be the stocking queen to me!
Oh, your homemade stockings are absolutely charming! Love the post. 🙂
Thank you Libbie! I do simple really well LOL!
We were totally on the same page on this one, Michelle! Love how yours turned out. I thought about using pinking shears around the edge, then decided on the frayed look. They’re so fun to hang anywhere; now I want to make some with cutter quilts:) Love how you styled the whole wall. Think this is what my daughter is envisioning on her 1st house kitchen wall; will show her yours!
Thank you Lora, I agree we were on the same page with this one! 😊 I may have enough fabric scraps to make some mini stockings like yours! Thanks for the inspiration!
Michelle, your linen stockings turned out beautifully! I have made stockings in the past, for my brothers while I was in high school or early college, as part of their gift that year. Yours really dress up the plate rack with seasonal style! Lovely!!
I do have a couple of those English ceramic houses. An old boyfriend’s mother gave me one they brought back from living in Germany. The other two I brought back from England from visiting my brother and his family. They feature in my decor usually sometime each winter. Love yours!
Enjoy your pretty stockings and Happy Thanksgiving,
Barb 🙂
Thanks for noticing the English cottages, and the sweet comments Barb! Hugs!
Okay! Now this is something I can do! I love the edges and using a dish towel for the hemmed top. I’ve wished for a plate rack for years. They seem to be a lot of fun to decorate. Your stockings are precious, hanging there, and everything is so elegant yet fun. Seriously love this look. I bet the blue and white work perfectly with your green kitchen. pinned
Thank you Cindy for the sweet comments! I love having a plate rack to decorate in my small kitchen with limited counter space and a tiny cooktop island. It is definitely one of my better decisions. 😉
