Design Challenge

Welcome to our September Design Challenge. Where I live we are still feeling as if our summer weather will never end, but I’m optimistic that things are about to change. It is the first day of fall. With that in mind I’m jumping into the next challenge that our host Cindy of County Road 407 has in store for us. If you are popping in from French Ethereal, I’m sure you enjoyed Barbs French country kitchen decor.

This month our inspiration photo is from Mathilde at Brocante Majolie of a kitchen fall tray. I think her kitchen counter decor has all the fall feels. These are the elements I’m going to be using in my kitchen vignette too.

Create A Fall Tray Vignette For The Kitchen

When it comes to our limited kitchen counter space, I don’t do a lot of seasonal decorating. Although when I do, I want it to feel special. A simple wood tray is the key to creating this cozy vignette, and gives me a starting point for arranging all the items I want to include.

For this post, I think it will be fun to show you how I like to build a vignette layer by layer, in order to create an eye pleasing arrangement. You will see that some of the layers are vertical and some are horizontal. Within those layers I have a wide variety of textures that will keep the eye moving.

Creating A Vignette With Layers

To create a backdrop for the arrangement, I’m placing cutting boards inside the tray, leaning against the tile backsplash. The large round cutting board seems to want to roll, so I’m leaning a small cutting board in front to keep it in place. I’m also placing a stack of blue and white plates on the tray, that I can use as a platform.

The next layer I’m adding a white crock holding utensils, placing it on the stack of plates. Then for color and pattern I’m leaning a little watercolor in a scalloped green frame in front of the cutting boards.

Continuing with the layers, I’m adding organic elements with a few dried yarrow stems in an ironstone pitcher, and a small twig pumpkin. Are you loving this yet? Yes? Me too, but there’s more.

Working my way to the front of the tray, I’m adding a small wireless lamp for height. I love the option of having a dimmable lamp for soft lighting, when I not using the candle. To finish the vignette I have a wicker pumpkin for texture.

Little Details That Matter

When creating a vignette, the little details matter too. If you take a closer look at the tray you see a plaid cloth napkin in fall colors. It is casually hanging over the side to soften the hard lines of the tray, just like the inspo photo. The napkin also brings pretty color to the front of the tray to draw the eye.

The last little layering detail to point out is a vintage mini pie tin to set the candle on. For some reason I always feel like candles should sit on a plate of some kind. Maybe it’s because they look more cozy on display that way. 😉
