Wooden Mushroom Ornaments
Every summer I enjoy coming up with a Christmas project or two. First of all, I love simple crafts. Second, I always run out of time as the holidays get closer, so the feeling of getting ahead and being productive is wonderful.
These wooden mushroom ornaments will go with so many decorating themes. This year I want to add to my Christmas woodland theme, and I think these mushrooms will fit right in.
Their muted colors will make them easy to mix in with other soft shades or neutral colors. You can also add them to rustic, cottage or old fashioned themes, even more depending on the colors you choose to paint them.
Supplies
- wooden mushrooms
- craft paint – matte and metallic
- small paint brushes
- craft glue
- screws eyes
- ribbon or string
Instructions For Mushroom Ornaments
For this project I’m using textured paint, because I’m looking for a soft rustic finish. However you can use any kind of craft paint you have. You can find the wooden mushrooms I’m using for this project here, and the textured paint here.
Apply one to two coats of paint to your wooden mushrooms and allow to dry. I’m using two shades, a lighter one (mesa pink) for the cap and a darker one (dusty trail) for the stem.
Once your base coat is dry, you can add details with a contrasting paint color around the bottom of the stem.
For the metallic paint (rose gold) I’m keeping it really simple with just dots spaced evenly on the cap. The reason why I went with the lighter color on the cap is so that the metallic dots will show up better.
The three tiny mushrooms in the set are too small to make into ornaments, so I’m combining them with two larger mushrooms. You can use craft glue or a glue gun to attach them, however this glue works really well to attach the small mushrooms.
Next create a small hole with a slender nail into the cap, so you can insert the screws eyes. You may need a pair of pliers to help sink the eye screws into place. If you don’t want to add the screw eyes, then another option is to glue ribbon or string to the top as a hanger.
To camouflage the screws eyes, just dab on a little metallic paint. When the metallic paint is dry you can add ribbon or string for a hanger.
You will find these screw eyes are a better color choice than the ones I’m using, and don’t require paint. Live and learn right?! 😉
Color Inspiration
The color inspiration for the mushrooms are the bottle brush trees I decorated with last year on the mantel. I plan to add more of those soft pinks and browns to our tree this year. You can click here to see the muted colored bottle brush trees I’m referring to.
I can’t wait to see how these wooden mushroom ornaments are going to look on our Christmas tree this year. To see my finial ornaments tutorial with copper leaf and metallic paint be sure to click on my post here.
