Mini Postage Stamp Art DIY
Real postage stamps are so fascinating to me considering their subject images, sizes, colors and country of origin. As a kid I collected them. Now just for fun, I can make my own mini postage stamps with whatever simple design I dream up.
For this project you will only need a few supplies.
- this is the stamp paper punch I’m using
- watercolor paper or mixed media paper
- watercolor paints and brushes
- watercolor markers
To start I’m using a stamp paper punch. These come in several different sizes, however the one I have, creates a stamp that is 1.5″ x 1.25″.
If you have extra scraps of watercolor or mixed media paper this is a great way to use it up. Once you have a little stack of stamp size papers you can start creating.
What To Paint
Paint random images or organize your ideas into categories, which may be a little easier. Here are a few of the categories I’m currently working on.
- fruits
- foods and desserts
- cocktails and tea cups
- coastal or summer
- lucky symbols
Anything goes here, because it is all about you and what you want to draw or paint. I also want to create postage stamps for holidays, seasons, vacation destinations, seashells and animals. Although I’m not very good with animals lol. Can you guess which stamp is my favorite? It’s a toss up between the taco and the watermelon. Maybe I’m just hungry haha!
I’m using watercolor paints and markers, because that’s what I paint with the most. However you can also use acrylic paints as well. No rules here!
As I continue, I will be making more postage stamps that are horizontal, since most of mine so far are vertical. Then I can create a collage to frame, to change things up a bit.
By the way, you may notice some of the stamps have USA or the value in cents. I’m deciding that I mostly like them without. What do you think?
Faming Your Mini Postage Stamps
If you decide to frame your wee works of art, you can mount your stamps with double sided tape to your paper. I have two completed frames so far with the stamps on watercolor paper with stripes. These background papers are pretty easy to create yourself. Another option is to use scrapbook paper or just plain white paper. It’s up to you to decide the best way to display your postage stamps.
This frame with pastry, desserts, coffee and tea is for the plate rack in the kitchen. I’m still cracking myself up over the Bonne Maman raspberry jam. Hope it makes you smile too.

Well I hope I have peaked your interest to make mini postage stamps. I have to say I’m having a blast with this little craft, mainly because I’m not getting hung up on the details. In fact the more imperfect the art is, the better. Plus I can paint a few stamps in my spare time without the pressure of finishing a big project. I hope you will enjoy them, and let me know how they turn out!
Cheers!
