French Country Style Table Setting. Create a casual chic tablescape with a mix of patterns, florals and vintage collections in French country shades of blue.

Design Challenge
Welcome back to another exciting Design Challenge. This month we are getting creative with beautiful summer tablescapes that are begging to entertain. Our host Cindy of County Road 407 is challenging us with a charming inspiration photo from Everyday Living.
Pam’s mix of florals from the tablecloth, to the dishes, and of course the centerpiece, is a true delight. Plus this English garden style tablescape is gorgeous from every angle, and so is the outdoor setting. Here’s what I’m pulling from the photo.
- hydrangeas
- interesting jar or container
- floral dishes
- woven chargers
- coordinating linens
French Country Style Table Setting
For my spin on the Design Challenge, I’m using what I have on hand to create a simple French country style table setting. Which means, I get to pull out some of my favorite vintage pieces. I love collecting blue transferware dishes, buying them one piece at a time. They mostly live on my wall dish rack, so I’m excited to share them in this table setting.
By the way, due to extreme summer temperatures the last few weeks, this tablescape is in our casual breakfast room. If it were outside, we would be eating in the pool LOL!
Mixing Linens And Dish Patterns
This tablescape starts with a blue floral blossom block print tablecloth, and natural rattan chargers. There’s just something I adore about a square tablecloth on a round table. Maybe, because it looks spur-of-the-moment, and casual. The same goes for the large blue gingham pattern napkins, which definitely keeps the mood feeling light.
At each table setting, I’m using one of my vintage blue transferware plates or bowls. I also have a couple of butter pat dishes that I recently found online. You may notice that the blue shades vary from dish to dish. No two are the same pattern or color, which adds to the charm of collecting.
Vintage Appeal of French Country Style
Along with the vintage dishes, I’m also using our vintage antler knives. My father-in-law gave these to us more than 40 years ago. I still treasure them, and never put them in the dishwasher. 😉 For stemware, I’m using French style champagne flutes, which I love for their thick chunky glass. More bubbly? Oui, merci!
The floral centerpiece in a vintage jar is a mix of green hydrangeas, pink snap dragons, white bellflowers and stock. I use this jar all the time for arrangements, because it always seems to be the right size. To change up the look, I’m placing the jar on a flat oyster plate. I think the oyster plate looks sort of like a flower, so hey it works for me.
The final touch to the centerpiece is pale blue ribbon from strips of silk fabric. Not vintage, but still adds to the French country style table setting.

What an absolutely gorgeous table setting Michelle! I adore the beautiful blues. The dishes and knives call out to me. 🙂
Thank you so much Laura! It’s hard for me to pass up the classic blue and white! 😉
Your table is very pretty. I especially like your tablecloth, flower arrangement, and pretty wrinkled ribbon.
Thank you so much Lauren for stopping by! Hugs!
Your table is beautiful, Michelle! I love the small touches like the blue silk ribbon on the vase, and those antler knives are incredible. Glad you’re staying cool indoors. We’re just starting to get really hot here, and I’m always anxious for summer to be over.
Thank you Wendy for the sweet comments! I love summer, but when the temperatures get out of hand I get a little anxious for it to be over too!
I am DROOLING over those blue transferware plates, Michelle! How fun to style your table around them. And great idea to put the oyster dish under the flowers; great layer! Such a pretty table, especially when you’re looking outside at a pool’s blue water. Enjoy the rest of your summer, friend!
Thanks so much Lora! I’m happy you noticed the oyster dish! 😊 Just trying to think outside the box, which is something I have learned from you my friend!
I’d rather come to your house, Michelle. Your transferware, with the gorgeous tablecloth and butter pat dishes, is stunning. There’s just something about a clear glass vase with green stems and water. I love it!!! I recently found a glass pitcher I’m anxiously waiting to add flowers to.
Oui, Oui, Mademoiselle, si belle! 😉 pinned
Thank you Cindy for the sweet comments! I love flowers in glass pitchers, which always looks so elegant. I hope you will share yours in a post!
Michelle, I love your French Country table setting! The blue and white in different hues all work together, and the oyster plate is perfect under your vase ~ which is STUNNING with all the flowers!!! The oyster plate also nods to the flower-shaped placemats; very cute!! Just lovely… Pinned a bunch, of course. 🙂
Enjoy your beautiful table,
Barb 🙂
Thank you Barb for the lovely comments! I appreciate any and everything pinned! Big hugs, and I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer!
