October Pinterest Challenge
It’s time for our October Pinterest Challenge, and this month we are sharing candle projects. If this is your first time to join us for a Pinterest challenge, this is how it works. Our host Cindy of County Road 407, selects a photo for us to recreate, and each participant puts their own spin on the photo.
If you’re popping over from my friend Cindy of DIY Beautify, welcome to Thistle Key Lane. I’m loving Cindy’s spin on this month’s challenge. How cute is that sugar mold?!

The inspiration photo for this month is from Cozy Stylish Chic of Jeanne’s birch candle holders. I’m loving the look of the real birch logs made into candle holders and the greenery around the base.
Faux Birch Candle Arrangement DIY
To create my version of the inspiration photo I’m painting flameless candles to resemble birch wood. I’m also creating an arrangement featuring the faux birch candles and lots of natural elements.
Here’s a short list of supplies that you need to make faux birch candle tapers like mine.
Supplies For Faux Birch Candles
- flameless tapers with a remote
- craft paint
- sponge brush
Instructions
First apply a base coat of craft paint in a light gray with a sponge brush to each candle and allow them to dry. The color I’m using is cool concrete which is a textured paint.
Next I’m adding some cream colored paint in big blotches over the light gray. This paint color is parchment in a matte finish.
The last step is adding some character marks that you might see on birch bark with dark brown paint. You can use just the edge of the sponge brush to make the marks or short lines. Be sure to vary the marks, so that each candle looks a little different.
How To Create An Arrangement
I’m using a large terra cotta pot for this arrangement, however you can use a wooden or ceramic bowl just as easily. On the inside of the clay pot I’m creating a platform with floral foam cut to size that will support the candles.
You may want to create small holes in the floral foam before inserting the candles. When you have the candles in place surround them with pine cones, unshelled nuts, acorns, birch twigs and dried pods for autumn.
Around the base I have a layer of juniper stems, pine cones, dried leaves and twig pumpkins. The green velvet ribbon adds a wee bit more greenery, and also adds a softer texture to the arrangement. Thinking ahead for Christmas or winter, this would be gorgeous with fresh greenery or moss. Take away the pumpkins, and you’re half way there.
This is probably one of the easiest arrangements or centerpieces you can create. There’s no right or wrong way to make it, so just use what you have or go scavenging outdoors to see what you can find. Here are a few more ideas of natural materials you can add to your arrangement.
- pieces of bark
- cinnamon sticks
- shells
- dried orange slices
- feathers
- dried moss
- seed pods
- dried flower buds
