Today I’m sharing an easy project, DIY raffia and shell candle holders with three different looks to choose from. These are simple to make, and you can use them anywhere you want to add a bit of summer or coastal feel.

July Handcrafted Society
It’s time for our Handcrafted Society monthly get together hosted by Wendy of WM Design House. If you’re wondering what the Handcrafted Society is all about. Simply put, it’s a group of bloggers who share a love for handcrafted items.
Our challenge each month is to take an assigned medium or theme and create whatever our heart desires. The medium for our July challenge is sea shells. Are you ready to see what everyone created? Me too!
If you’re coming over from Saved From Salvage, I’m so happy you’re here. Regina came up with our challenge medium this month, and I’m loving what she did with her coastal tablescape. Those oyster candles are so pretty!

DIY Raffia And Shell Candle Holders
I got the idea of making shell candle holders while creating a summer coastal tablescape. Instead of using plain candle holders, I jazzed up some yogurt jars, and empty votive candle holders that I had on hand. I think you’ll find these are so simple to make, and a quick way to add a bit of color or texture to a table setting or vignette.
Supplies And Shopping links
- small glass jars or glass tea light candle holders
- raffia multi colors
- scissors
- shells, sea star or sand dollar
- hot glue gun and glue sticks
Before you start make sure your jars or glass candle holders are sparkling clean. Next take about 6 or 7 strands of raffia and wrap them around your candle holder two or three times. Secure with a dot of hot glue as needed.
Tie the raffia into a knot and trim the ends with scissors. Finish by hot gluing a sea shell over the knot. Add a votive candle or tea light.
This little project is easy to modify using jute or cotton string, if you’re looking for something other than raffia.
As you can see these candle holders are quick to make. Once my glue gun got up to temperature, which seemed to take forever, I finished all of these candle holders in less than an hour.
Decorating With Raffia And Shell Candle Holders
With this easy project, I now have two sets of tea light candle holders, one set with yellow and brown raffia, the other set with all green raffia. I can use them to complete almost any table setting when I want a little romanic glow or in a simple vignette.
Be sure to check out my post, Blue And Green Summer Coastal Tablescape featuring the green raffia candle holders.
I think the candle holders look cute on my open shelf display too. They’re in a handy spot, ready to add to the table at a moments notice.
For a different look I decorated a medium size candle holder with brown raffia then added three sand dollars. I think the contrast in color between the white sand dollars and the dark brown raffia is so striking.
By the way, on this one you’ll notice I didn’t cover up the raffia knot. Instead I hot glued the sand dollars on the flat areas of the raffia.
