February Handcrafted Society
It’s time for the Handcrafted Society to gear up again with all new challenges. If you are wondering what the Handcrafted Society is all about. Quite simply it’s a group of bloggers who share a love for detail and craftsmanship. To see last February’s HS project you can click here for my tutorial on DIY Bobbin Frames In Spring Colors.
This month we have eleven bloggers sharing glass projects. Be sure to check out all the links and photos at the end of my post for everyone participating this month.
Anthropologie Inspired Candles DIY
The inspiration for my Handcrafted Society challenge this month is from Anthropologie. I’m in love with the floral designs on these glass candle holders. My first thought was to paint flowers, but to get those pretty delicate details I’m using rub on floral transfers instead.
These rub on transfers come in a set of 6 floral designs with two sheets of transfers in each envelope. I was drawn to these transfers, because they look like natural pressed florals. In fact, the realistic colors are much like the pressed flower art you can see in my post here.
I’m sharing three smooth glass candle holders in different colors and floral themes. This is a super easy way to recycle your old candle holders and give them a sophisticated new look. For the challenge I’m focusing on glass containers, however the rub on transfers work the same on ceramic as well. 😉
Supplies and Shopping links
- glass candle holders or new candle in a glass container
- rub on flower and leaf transfers
- scissors
- candle making kit (optional)
Large Three Or Four Wick Candle Holder
Before starting make sure the glass surface of your candle holder is clean. Then cut out the flower transfers from your sheet. Remove the clear projective plastic backing, then press the flower transfer to the glass. Rub with your finger over the image to make sure it adheres to the glass, then carefully remove the frosted plastic film.
Repeat the process adding one image at a time around the outside of the glass container. The transfer sheets also have round and rectangular images that you can mix in with the florals for interest. I’m using a rose transfer on each scalloped section of the green glass container for a subtle vintage feel. What do you think?
Once all the transfers are in place, add your candle wicks and fill with wax to make a new candle. I’ll be writing a post for DIY candle making soon.
Votive Candle Holders
For the second rub on transfer project, I’m recycling a white votive candle holder. This time I’m going for a green foliage theme with ferns and other types of greenery.
Just as in the first project, I’m applying one image at a time, except I’m angling the images in different directions. I really like how the transfers show up on the white glass, which in a way is much more striking than on the green glass.
Instead of filling this container with new wax, I’m simply inserting a votive candle. How easy is that?! You can also use a flameless tea light candle if you wish.
New Ready Made Candle
Don’t have containers to recycle? Then take a look at the third rub on transfer project, which is a new blue frosted candle. For this one I’m picking purple and lavender rub on flower transfers. I’m loving the variety of flowers on this one which could be my favorite. I’m having a hard time making up my mind, because each one looks so unique. Do you have a favorite?
