Summer Red White And Blue Centerpiece. Create a summertime vignette with patriotic colors using new and vintage items. I’ll also show you how to give your arrangement a subtle coastal feel with simple white hydrangeas and sea shells.
June Pinterest Challenge
It’s time for our June Pinterest challenge. I always get so excited about these posts, because there’s always something new to try or discover. This month our challenge is July 4th basket vignettes. If this is your first time to join us for a Pinterest challenge, this is how it works. Our host Cindy of County Road 407, selects a photo for us to recreate, and each participant puts their own spin on the photo.
Today we have 10 bloggers sharing a variety of patriotic basket ideas. If you’re popping over from French Ethereal welcome to Thistle Key Lane. I’m loving the vintage pieces sweet Barb is incorporating into her vignette. How about you?
Our inspiration photo this month is from Rachel of The Antique Journey sharing a darling patriotic vignette with a vintage flare. I’m sure the first thing you may notice is the vintage marshmallow tin that Rachel is using for a vase. So cute!
Summer Red White And Blue Centerpiece
Well I don’t have anything quite as darling as Rachel’s marshmallow tin, but I do have a few things that work for a patriotic vignette. Here’s my list of what I’m gathering from Rachel’s inspiration photo.
- tray basket
- interesting vase container with logo
- vintage dishes
- American flag
- flowers
- basket filler
Building a Red White And Blue Centerpiece
For my spin on the Pinterest challenge, I’m starting with a tray basket as a base for my red, white and blue centerpiece. This is a nice size, and will not take up too much space on our kitchen table.
On the tray, I have a stack of dishes with a blue and white transferware plate on top. It’s one of favorite vintage plates with little cherries and leaves around the rim. The dishes serve two purposes, decoration and a sturdy platform. That way I have a flat surface to support a vase for flowers.
Interesting Vase Container For Fresh Flowers
To bring in a pop of red for this July 4th basket vignette I’m using a sponge painted jar. The Kerr logo is almost as fun as the one on Rachel’s tin, don’t you think? For the painted jar tutorial you can click on my post Spongeware Mason Jar Centerpiece.
The wide mouth jar easily holds six white hydrangeas plus greenery. I forgot how much I miss hydrangea arrangements, you can bet when these fade I’ll be adding fresh ones again.
Basket Filler
For my coastal vibe I’m adding a variety of sea shells, oyster shells and a starfish as basket filler. The shells are mostly a dark blueish gray, which fits in with my summer theme and looks so pretty with the transferware plate.
In Rachel’s basket vignette she has a faux flower nestled into the basket. Since I’m using fresh flowers in the vase, I decided to create a flower shape with three pinwheels tied with colored string. Don’t you love the unexpected pop of color and pattern?
The Stars And Stripes
I think the summer red, white and blue centerpiece is pretty with or without the stars and stripes, so I’m including photos with both looks. It’s fun to see how flowers and flags mix together or you can just use a vase of flags if you wish. To see several vase vignettes with flags you can click on my post here.

Michelle, what a beautiful centerpiece! Your seashells filler is a unique touch, and I love the pop of color from the pinwheels! Always so creative my friend! Happy summer xox
Thank you Cindy! I took some liberties with this challenge, but I’m so happy you like it!
Michelle, your basket is picture perfect. I love the soft touch of the blue and white twin on your mason jar and the addition of the coastal sea shells.
Thank you Wendy! I love these challenges so much!
LOVE your basket vignette, Michelle!! Such fun elements for the summer season!
Thank you for inspiring our Pinterest Challenge Rachel! Hugs!!
Michelle,
I’m glad you are bringing out your sponged Kerr jar. It really is pretty and I know I have completely forgotten that sponging and spongeware was super popular just a few years ago plus also during the early days of our country’s birth. Lovely!! I will check out your post. The shells and starfish really bring out the idea of heading to the beach for me.
Happy early 4th of July to you and your family,
Barb 🙂
Thank you Barb! I adore spsongeware, and hope to collect a few pieces someday!
Your basket is perfect. I love the sponged Mason jar and those pinwheels are so fun! And what a great idea to add shells. Great job turning the inspo photo into the Michelle vibe! Hope your pool stays cool. I remember one summer all of us kids in the neighborhood collected money to buy a giant block of dry ice. We begged an older brother of a friend to drive around to the alley and dump it in our pool. We were now broke and so dumb. The block lasted a few hours and it didn’t really make the pool any less hot. LOL, teenage stupidity. Anyway, enjoy your summer, and thank you for joining in. pinned,
Haha I bet you kids were so disappointed the dry ice didn’t cool down the pool. I gotta say though, we threw some into the pool last year and it was a blast to watch it bubble up to the surface! Enjoy your summer my friend!
Michelle, how beautiful! The fresh flowers are gorgeous and I love the oceany-vibe with the seashells. What a fun addition! Pinned.
Thank you so much Niky! Happy Summer!
Love the shell filler idea for a nod to oceanside 4th of July celebrations; great idea, Michelle! Your house is definitely ready for the 4th!
Yes we are ready for the 4th of July celebrations! Hope you enjoy it too!
Michelle
Love your take on the basket challenge. The shells are a great touch. Good job.
Michelle, that spongeware vase is beautiful. I love the soft red color for your pretty white hydrangeas. The dishes are great too – both from a practical and design standpoint. Enjoy this lovely arrangement for 4th of July.
Ooh, I love the coastal vibe with the seashells! And the beautiful decorated mason jars are a perfect addition! I always love seeing what you come up with. Beautiful! Pinned!
