I’m finally ready to share more ideas for decorating with plates. A few months ago I found white plates hiding in plain sight in a kitchen cabinet, and now my blank walls are thanking me. If you are looking for an easy way to decorate a room with interesting shapes or just need a pop of color, try plates.
Ideas For Decorating With Plates
One good thing about decorating with white plates is that they can go just about anywhere. I have a mix of ironstone, china and everyday pottery in varying shades of white. For more ideas see my post Decorating With Plates Simple and Easy.
Living Room Ideas
I love the shape of these two ironstone platters that I found in my favorite local antique mall right after the holidays. After stacking them to one side of the large polo watercolor I had to recenter the sofa. I’m pretty sure that’s not the right way to decorate but hey it works.
You may wondering why there’s a little space above the platters. Well I did that on purpose because I’m optimistically thinking I’ll find another one…someday.
On the other side of the room the three white dinner plates take on a new look with the addition of this cute rattan bar cart. The plates look more like they are part of a grouping now.
Decorating With Plates Over A Headboard
Three of the plates from on my recent kitchen reorganization are now in the guest room above the headboard. These are Portmerion earthenware dishes that have a pretty leaf pattern around the edge. Their thickness and weight remind me a lot of ironstone.
What I really like about the white plates is how great they look on these light blue walls. This is the most serene room in the house and one of my favorites to decorate.
China plates with a cottage garden feel compliment the ticking headboard and bedding in the master bedroom. I love the previous Limoges plate, (see before views in Updating A Bedroom With Patterns), but the scale of these plates work much better over this wide head board.
Plates Over The Entry Table And Hallway
Don’t you just love how these white plates look on this navy wall. They may not have as much character as stoneware or ironstone but the overall look is working for me.
The rest of the earthenware dishes are hanging out with the deer head in the adjacent hallway. This is more of a trial run. I’m thinking it may look better to have a few more plates in a circle around the mount, but we’ll see. What do you think about the plate and deer mix? Let me know your thoughts!
Be sure to follow Thistle Key Lane on Pinterest where the boards are up to date with ideas that you can use right now!
Bonus Decor Tip: Instead of using wire hangers, use adhesive plate hangers, which are available in different sizes. They don’t harm the plate and are easily to remove by following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Thank you for visiting today. Let me know your favorite way to decorate with plates.
Cheers!

I wouldn’t put more than two more plates with the dead deer. Any more and you’ll take away from the poor thing’s head.

Good advice, thank you Sheila! 🙂

Hi Michelle,
I also enjoy displaying some of my plates on the wall. I would prefer something more rustic to go with your feet head, the plates around it make me think of a venison feast about to be served – poor thing! I do like all the others, have you considered a small round of square plate above the two rectangular platters? Until you find the ideal piece, and things always look better in threes.
Great job!

Hi Susan, I appreciate your suggestion about the deer head and yes I really need something above the platters. Thank you so much!

Ah – plates are one of my favorite things to mix in on a wall! I think I have them on 5 different walls in my house, 6 if you count the ones hung on a folding screen. RE the deer/plates mix – the balance is just right with the 3, but I’m not sure I’d use plates under what might have been dinner at one time LOL
Michelle Meyer says
Yes the deer/plate mix is definitely a work and process. I appreciate your thoughts Janet! 🙂

May I ask you where you got your bamboo bar cart. I love it.
Michelle Meyer says
Hello Rozz, I purchased the rattan cart at Target. There is a link in the post – https://thistlekeylane.com/relaxing-patio-style-with-blue-and-white-accents/ but I believe they are currently sold out.

I’m in love with the blue and white paisley (?) material on your pillow. I also love the ties on the pillow cover. Is the cover homemade? Any idea where I can purchase the fabric? Thank you.
Michelle Meyer says
I purchased the fabric from JoAnn’s at the first of the year. I’m sorry I don’t have the brand name. For more views to see how I made the cover see the post – https://thistlekeylane.com/ideas-for-making-easy-pillow-covers-with-ties/
