Easy Yarn Ghosts DIY
When it comes to Halloween decorations, I much prefer cute, funny or clever over anything that’s creepy or frightening. These not so spooky ghosts are a blast to make, and you can personalize them as you wish.
Yarn ghosts come together quickly, just as if you are making a tassel. My ghosts are about 4-1/2 inches, but you can make yours any size you want. Here’s what you’ll need to make some for yourself or to give away.
Supplies And shopping links
- cotton yarn
- scissors
- cardboard
- fabric scraps or ribbon
- wiggly eyes
- craft glue
- dowel, stick or pencil
Instructions
Wrap the yarn around a piece of cardboard until you get the fullness you desire.
Remove yarn from the cardboard and tie a piece of yarn around the strands to hold them together. Then cut the loops of yarn.
Fold the strands of yarn and tie another piece of yarn about an inch from the top. This will create the head of the ghost. You can trim the ends of the yarn or leave them looking uneven.
Next glue wiggly eyes into place. If you don’t have wiggly eyes, use black craft paper and a hole punch to make eyes. Easy peasy!
You can use the ghosts to create a garland or make ghosts to display. Insert a wood dowel, stick or unsharpened pencil into the center of the ghosts.
Adding Accessories
To make stylish Halloween ghosts add a colorful scarf to each one. This is a great way to use scrap fabric or ribbon you have on hand. I’m using very narrow strips fabric that are torn to look like fringe.
Most of the ribbon in my craft stash is too wide for this project, so I cut the ribbon into narrow strips. That way the ribbon is much easier to tie around the necks of the ghosts.
You can add more accessories if you like with cute Barbie sunglasses, hats and bags. How about a witch hat or cat mask. The ideas are endless, but the point is to have fun making your yarn ghosts.
By the way, I should mention that you don’t have to use white yarn. Next time I make yarn ghosts I’m going to look for muted soft autumn colors. It will be interesting to see what combinations I can come up with. Are you thinking about what colors you would like?
