Instead of spending my Saturday painting like a mad woman, I turned my attention to the cedar chest that sits in front of the bed. This piece of furniture has been used and abused by little paws. The dogs use it to jump on and off the bed, as a result it has been recovered countless times over the years. The things we do for our puppy dogs, right!

Before I started the project, I was going through photos of the chest and realized the Early American hardware had to go. Adding to my never-ending list of things to do, was a trip to the hardware store. I found very simple handles and knobs that looked like aged pewter. They compliment the color of the wood and the fabric beautifully.

In addition to updating the fabric, I also replaced the very tired and deteriorating old foam.
Old hardware was removed and the holes patched with wood filler.
After removing the hardware, I realized the holes were much larger than expected. Every project has to have a challenge or two, although I thought this one was going to be quick and simple! How silly of me!

When I removed the old hardware, I also discovered the wood beneath was darker. This is at the dog’s eye level, but Sandy and Dottie promised they wouldn’t say a word. (My most loyal fans!) Besides, I think the new hardware hides it very well.

There was a time I really fussed over selecting fabric for the cedar chest, but not any more. Knowing how often it is going to be replaced, I look for durable fabric with a pattern in the right color, and just go with it.
