Velvet Chair

In the spotlight this week is a beautiful velvet chair, worthy of its own post. A few months ago, my husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday. Instead of asking for a weekend get-a-way or jewelry, I said I wanted to have a chair recovered. Maybe I was thinking too much like a blogger at the time, but the chair I had in mind really needed a makeover. Once you see the before and after photos, I know you will agree.

From the moment I considered reupholstering the chair, I envisioned it in velvet. That may sound really luxurious but velvet is known for its durability. I’ve often heard it described as bullet-proof fabric. Velvet is also a classic that can be dressed up or down, and never seems to go out of style.

Now for the dreaded before photo. The fabric has seen better days but the overall condition of the chair is in great shape.

If you are trying to make up your mind on whether to reupholster a piece of furniture, you might want to consider the following.

Would the cost of having the chair reupholstered be less than purchasing a new chair? This was a big determining factor for me, and yes it was a lot less expensive to have it reupholstered than to buy it new.

Does the style of the chair still compliment your decor? Even though I purchased the chair ten years ago, it has a classic style that blends in with the other furnishings of the room.

Is the chair comfortable?  I love to curl up in this chair to read, but it’s also just as comfortable for other members of the family. If you have a chair everyone fights over, it’s a keeper!

Is the construction of the frame well-made? I was familiar with the manufacturer of the chair when I purchased it, so I knew it was a piece that would last for many years.

Is the chair versatile enough to be used in other spaces? Versatility is what I would consider a bonus feature.  When purchasing or reupholstering a chair think about the different spaces it can be used, such as a bedroom, reading nook, entry or home office.

Thank you so much for stopping by and letting me share my velvet chair with you.

Cheers!
