Our Thanksgiving dough bowl tablescape is a bit of a departure from previous years, but I’m loving this casual look. By using simple linens, dishes and stemware, all the focus is on the centerpiece, which is one big arrangement full of dried foliage, gourds and pumpkins.
Thanksgiving Dough Bowl Tablescape
This year’s centerpiece is made with pieces and parts of the fall arrangements from the family room, entryway and kitchen. Remember the big dough bowl full of gourds from my Fall Home Tour With Neutral Colors? Yep I’m reusing the same bowl and many of the gourds as well.
I’m also using the safflowers from the fresh floral arrangement on the entry table. To see before photos of the flowers, click on Simple Fall Porch & Entry Way Ideas.
The safflowers were allowed to dry naturally, and to my delight still have their crinkly green leaves intact. I think those little pops of orange and the soft green shades really make the dried arrangement special.

How To Create A Dried Dough Bowl Centerpiece
- Start by creating a grid with floral tape or Scotch tape over a wooden bowl. This will give the arrangement structure to the base when adding the dried grasses and florals.
- Add layers of the dried florals and leaves working in a circle around the arrangement until you have the desired fullness.
- In the center arrange gourds of different sizes. Nestle in some faux, twig or wire pumpkins that are light weight.
- Study the arrangement from all sides and fill in gaps with mini gourds or leaves.
Setting The Table
I’m keeping the place settings simple this year with white dishes, mix-n-match stemware, family silverware and elk handle knives. Brown rattan chargers add a contrast in color with the stripe linen table cloth, and I like that they provide a bit of extra interest to the table.
Can you guess my favorite feature of the table? It’s the napkins! For about a millisecond I thought of using my traditional plaid napkins, but the lace trim napkins are the big winners.
Each linen napkin is tied with cotton string, and a tiny branch of yellow broom is tucked in place. I love the vintage feel this adds to the table.
Flameless Candles
My original plans for the table included tappers or votive candles, but I realized my centerpiece had the potential of going up in flames. Yikes, not a good image to have!
Instead I’m using flameless votive candles in faux pewter candle holders. They will still provide a little bit of festive ambiance, but more importantly they be much safer to use.
