Today I’m sharing how I’m brightening up the kitchen with a spring wall basket upcycle project. I’ll show you how easy it is to give new life to a drab looking basket with paint and a little elbow grease. This is also my solution for adding a touch of spring decor into the kitchen, while keeping our counter space uncluttered.

My takeaway of the inspiration photo is more of an impression or feeling, than it is actually recreating a tabletop centerpiece. Here’s what I’m focusing on for a pretty wall display instead.

Spring Wall Basket Upcycle Project

The first step in creating my spring wall display, is upcycling a boring little basket with paint. Most of the time I love natural colored baskets, but this one just doesn’t have the character I’m looking for.

Supplies For Basket Upcycle

chalk or craft paint
chip brush or craft brush
sanding sponge or sand paper
light antiquing wax (optional)

This is an easy makeover project, and one that will take about an hour to complete.

Be sure to over your work surface before starting. I have a good size piece of cardboard that folds in half and stores away easily in my craft closet that I use all the time.
Paint one coat of chalk or craft paint on your basket. Don’t worry too much about complete coverage because much of the paint will be removed with sanding. I’m using Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint in Pure.
Allow paint to dry. If you’re using a thick coat of paint drying time may take a little bit longer.
Sand off as much paint as you want to achieve the look you desire. My sanding is mainly on the high points and a little heavier around the top of the basket. Note: I did not paint the inside of the basket.
The last step is applying a little bit of light antiquing wax with a cotton cloth over the entire surface. I think it looks a little better with the antiquing wax, so I’m saying this step is optional.

Spring Wall Basket For The Kitchen

My wall display starts in the kitchen with the cup rack that I’m repurposing for a pot rack. I set aside the bread boards that were hanging on the pot rack to make room for the basket.

The leather loop on the back of the basket slips easily over a metal hook, and it looks pretty without taking up much space.

I’m using faux flowers instead of fresh, big shocker I know, but I want to enjoy this arrangement until summer arrives. Although, if I want to change it up sooner, I can insert a couple of plastic bottles inside the basket to hold fresh flowers and water. See I’m already thinking ahead. 😉

Rustic terracotta pots fit right in with the spring flower theme, and I like the contrast in texture they have with the shiny copper pots.

Did you notice the rosemary? I love bringing in rosemary cuttings from the patio, because the fresh scent lasts for days. I also like to tie little bundles to hang from the pot rack, which makes my kitchen smell good without having to cook.

To finish my little spring wall display, I’m using a linen kitchen towel to soften the hard edges of the pot rack.
