Styling A Spring To Summer Mantel

Right now, I’m simplifying my home decor starting with my spring to summer mantel. This time of year is the easiest for me to decorate, because basically I’m starting with a clean slate. This is what I call my everyday decorating and I’m basking in the fresh uncluttered look.

Asymmetrical Decorating

Asymmetrical works best for my casual way of decorating and I almost aways arrange accessories in odd numbers. I would say, I’ve come a long way since decorating my first home thinking everything had to be perfectly balanced.

My style today is much more interesting with things I’ve collected and finding new ways to group them together.

On one side of the mantel I have a stack of books with a fern and a large glass bottle. The other side has three vases holding honeysuckle with one vase elevated on a book.

Decorating With Green

When I think of spring to summer decorating I think of plants, flowers and a ton of sunlight. There is always plenty of light in this room with three large arched windows facing south. I think that’s why my little fern is doing so well in here. Repotting also helps. The fern on the mantel has double in size the last few months.

Right now honeysuckle is in bloom along the trail where I take my morning walks and no surprise a few clippings came home with me. A few tree trimmings also made their way into the vases.

Did you see my post on Updating The Entry Table With Flowers? This is the same idea. I can replace the honeysuckle in a few weeks with other clippings from the garden, or add flowers I pick up at the market.

My home is simply furnished with limited horizontal surfaces to work with. Someday I hope to add bookshelves on each side of the fireplace, but until then the focal point of the room is the large watercolor print over the fireplace and the mantel.

Here are some ideas that won’t cost a thing if you shop your own home for collectables to group together. Think in terms of what’s fresh and easy to clean too.

What’s your favorite season to decorate? Of course I always look forward to the fall, but I don’t think I would have an appreciation for fall without enduring a steamy summer.

Cheers!
