How To Create An Antique Zinc Finish

I love to display flowers in this old bucket.

Today I have a quick tutorial on how to create an antique zinc finish.  In just a few steps the shiny surface of a galvanized bucket can be transformed into a beautiful time-worn finish. Faux finishes are here to stay. Of course our first choice would be to have the real thing, but when antiques are hard to find or out of our price range we have to get creative.

I wanted an interesting bucket or container that I could display flowers or plants in, that wouldn’t look out-of-place in my home. The shiny finish on the new bucket now has an antique zinc looking finish that has a soft beautiful patina.

The finish is achieved with Amy Howard at Home Zinc Antiquing Solution and a short list of supplies.

How To Create An Antique Zinc Finish

I like working on a piece of card board to protect the surface of the table I’m working on. Following the manufactures directions:  Pour some of the solution into a glass bowl, dip the cotton cloth in the solution then apply the solution to the bucket in a whipping and blotting motion.

The first time, I wasn’t aggressive enough with my application, so I applied the solution again and got amazing results.

I love mixing vintage elements with the everyday decor of my home. Some pieces are actually old, and some are just made to look old. Nostalgic pieces remind us of a past that was simple and comfortable. They also remind us that not everything has to be shiny and new. We love the imperfect things because we’re imperfect too.

One of my favorite things to displays in my antique zinc finish bucket is a potted hydrangea. The subtle gray color of the aged metal really makes the flowers and the greenery pop.
