This year I’m going for a fresh and airy spring mantel with a little different styling than in the past. Sometimes it’s fun to mix things up and that’s exactly what I’m doing. In today’s post I’ll show you how I’m using a variety of materials and textures to create a light and casual spring mantel.
Fresh and Airy Spring Mantel
The mantel is usually the first spot I decorate with seasonal changes. The exception this season is the bar cart. To view my post click on Styling A Bar Cart For Early Spring and a Pinterest challenge.
One thing I’ve learned from the Pinterest challenges, is how to decorate with what I have in ways that I haven’t tried before. A big part of seasonal decorating is moving accessories from room to room. You know how birds migrate? Well that’s what a lot of my accessories do, except now even more.
Adding Interesting Shapes And Textures
Migrating from the living room is a lovely tall woven vase. It just barely fits on the narrow mantel but I’m loving the shape and texture it provides.
Instead of fresh flowers I’m using some artificial daisy stems and a few curly willow branches for height. The flowers add a bit of whimsey to the mantel with their paper petals, which of course adds another layer of texture.
If you know me at all, you know I love using fresh flowers especially for special occasions, but for longevity, it makes more since to use faux flowers.

This rustic old lantern is charming even without its original glass and base. Well actually, the fact that it’s missing the glass is one of its redeeming qualities. Talk about airy, without the glass, I can display so many different things inside, such as a plant or little arrangement.
The terracotta pots on the mantel also add interest with their rough texture and bring in thoughts of spring gardening.
Faux Vs. Live Plants
I don’t necessarily consider myself a plant lady, but I do love real plants. That is, I love them as long as they tolerate me LOL! I’m going to baby these mini plants for a few weeks, and then I’ll transplant them into larger pots.
For now, I just love that pop of green they provide inside the lantern and next to the woven vase.

I love the height that a topiary adds to any vignette, and at a distance it’s really hard to tell that it’s not real.
You may notice I’m still decorating with my painted books. Every time I take them off to restyle the mantel, I put them right back on there. Some things never change I guess.

Since this is early spring we still have the fireplace going on late chilly afternoons and evenings. Before long our daily temps will be in the 90s, so I’m really enjoying these cooler days as long as they last.
