Today I’m sharing some easy ways to transition into fall decorating. Every year fall takes its own sweet time making its way to our part of the country, so we have the option of easing our way into seasonal decor. Easy Ways To Transition Into Fall
I love the concept or idea of transitional decorating, which I like to think of as setting the stage. It’s a simple way of bringing in pops of color, patterns and textures. Then we can watch for all pretty mums, and fresh pumpkins to arrive at our local farmers’ market and add them to the mix.
Transitional Fall Decorating In The Family Room
Transitional fall decorating in the family room kicks off with the mantel. When I started my photo shoot of the mantel I couldn’t find any fresh sunflowers, but these Gerber daisies are the next best thing.
You just gotta love these long stems and bright yellow petals. If you’re wondering, the vases are recycled beverage bottles without labels, and yes the green one is too.
When the daisies fade, I’ll add dried grasses in the white vases, and tuck in a few fresh baby boo pumpkins here and there. Be sure to check out my post, Easy Thrift Store Vase Makeover. You won’t believe the before and after photos of the vases.
The additional artwork on the mantel is a new watercolor. You can say it’s an over simplified study or interpretation of Van Gogh’s sunflowers, which I had a lot of fun painting.
I feel like the yellow and orange colors mix well with the greens in the large watercolor print. Plus the simple black frames keep the mantel from looking too cluttered.
For now I’m keeping the coffee table decor very simple, with books, a fern in a rustic terra cotta pot and a hurricane candle holder. As we get closer to the first day of fall, I can add dried gourds or an autumn leaf arrangement.
Transitional Decorating With Color
Neutral fabrics are perfect for transitioning into fall, so I’m keeping a light weight cream colored throw handy on the ottoman. The tone on tone pillow cover that I’m borrowing from the living room adds an interesting pattern to the arm chair.
I’m introducing more blue and navy colors in the family room with a variety of pillows on the sofa. We have a lot of brown in this room, and I’m really loving the addition of the blue colors and patterns.
Hopefully by November we’ll have a new leather sofa in here, and I’ll be so happy with the extra seating it will provide. That will give us more room for the grand littles to pile up and watch their toons, as they call them.
Transitional Decorating With Flowers
Sunflowers are my go to flower for late summer to fall decorating. I was pretty excited to find sunflowers at Trader Joe’s a few days ago, not knowing how the sunflower fields are being affected by drought conditions. I really hope they will have more varieties in the coming weeks.
A simple vase of sunflowers sits on the kitchen table with a tray of utensils and silverware. I just love this little country looking vignette with a wicker pumpkin.
On the kitchen shelves I have another sunflower watercolor with wild greenery. I figure if I can’t find fresh sunflowers then I’ll just keep painting them. That works, right?! You can find all my watercolors including this one and the mantel sunflower watercolor at Society6.
