Crates On Casters

Swivel casters

I’m always looking for opportunities to make storage and organizing easier. Take a look at my tiny kitchen pantry for example. It is my pride and joy because no matter what’s going on in this household, it seems to stays organized. If I had to pick one thing to improve, it’s the heavy crate sitting on the floor.  It’s great for storage holding various types and sizes of drinks, but the down side is that it can be quite heavy to move when I need to clean.

The simple solution I found was adding casters to the bottom of the crate. That way it can be rolled in or out, just like the dog food bins. So easy right?

I’ve developed a fondness for crates. There are so many ways to use them and being made of wood they are very sturdy. Plus, I can paint them or leave the wood in its natural color.

Let’s talk about casters. Some are rigid, some can swivel and some have a brake so they don’t move. The casters I installed are swivel, that way the crate can be moved in different directions.

Swivel caster are easy to install. Using a pencil mark the holes for the screws and drill a shallow pilot hole. Then line up the base of the caster and attach with screws.

Here are two other fun storage projects using crates and casters. The first is a wine crate ottoman in my studio. I could have attached legs, but used casters instead so I can roll it out of the way when working on projects. For the full tutorial on assembling click on wine crate ottoman .

The second project, involved turning a round wooden cheese box into a low side table. It’s so convenient to roll it up to a chair for a place to set a drink. I think it adds a fun eclectic element  when parked next to the tailored wingback chair.

The best part of these simple crate projects are that they provide storage, and we’re always looking for clever ways of creating more storage. Hope this post has given you some helpful ideas. Thank you for stopping by!

Cheers!
